Abstract
Gas-metal reactions can have a significant impact on metals and alloys, affecting their properties (during processing) and accelerating service failures, particularly in hot, corrosive environments. This chapter discusses the kinetics of gas-metal reactions and how they are driven by Gibbs energy changes. It plots the energy of formation for many important metal oxides and explains how to construct isothermal stability diagrams to analyze complex reactions involving metals, alloys, and gases containing more than one reactive component.

Examining and evaluating the nitrided case is generally accomplished by hardness testing and microscopic examination. This chapter discusses both characterization methods, as well as sample preparation. The chapter also discusses the processes involved in the etching of the sample after microhardness testing and provides practices that contribute to the safe preparation of specimens. Fabricated powder metallurgy (P/M) parts are evaluated and tested at several stages during manufacturing for part acceptance and process control. The various types of tests included are dimensional evaluation, density measurements, hardness testing, mechanical testing, and nondestructive testing. This chapter is a detailed account of these testing methods. It describes the four most common types of defects in P/M parts, namely ejection cracks, density variations, microlaminations, and poor sintering. The chapter discusses the capabilities and limitations of various nondestructive evaluation methods to flaw detection in P/M parts. The nondestructive evaluation methods covered are mechanical proof testing, metallography, liquid penetrant crack detection, filtered particle crack detection, magnetic particle crack inspection, direct current resistivity testing, x-ray radiography, computed tomography, gamma-ray density determination, and ultrasonic techniques.

This chapter discusses the unique characteristics of isomorphous alloy systems. It begins with a review of the naming conventions for multi-component systems and the construction of a three-dimensional phase diagram for a two-component alloy system. It explains how phase diagrams can be constructed from time-temperature cooling curves and how they can be used to predict the phases present, their chemical compositions, and relative amounts. Abstract
This article, prepared under the auspices of the ASM Thermal Spray Society Committees on Accepted Practices, describes a procedure for evaluating residual stresses in thermal spray coatings, which is an extension of the well-known layer removal method to include the Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio properties of the thermal spray coating material and the substrate. It presents questions and answers that were selected to introduce residual stresses in thermal spray coatings. The article describes equipment and the laboratory procedure for the modified layer removal method and provides the description of the residual stress specimen. It also describes the procedures for applying or installing bonded resistance strain gages, the dimensions of the test specimen, the procedure for removing layers, and the method for interpreting the data to evaluate residual stresses. The spreadsheet program, “ MLRM for Residual Stresses ,” is available as a supplement to this document.

This chapter discusses the construction, interpretation, and use of ternary phase diagrams. It begins by examining a hypothetical phase space diagram and several corresponding two-dimensional plots.
