The gravity permanent mold (GPM) process produces castings of high strength and integrity with good surface finish and consistent dimensions. This chapter lists castings produced using GPM and semipermanent mold (SPM). It illustrates the basic elements of a conventional tilt pour machine. Abstract
This article explains how malleable iron is produced and how its microstructure and properties differ from those of gray and ductile iron. Malleable iron is first cast as white iron then annealed to convert the iron carbide into irregularly shaped graphite particles called temper carbon. Although malleable iron has largely been replaced by ductile iron, the article explains that it is still sometimes preferred for thin-section castings that require maximum machinability and wear resistance. The article also discusses the annealing and alloying processes by which these properties are achieved.

Abstract
Unlike conventional quench and temper heat treatment, austempering is an iron and steel heat-treatment process that enhances mechanical properties through the isothermal transformation of austenite with a minimum amount of quenching stresses. This chapter begins with a discussion of austemperability requirements. Then outlines of austenitizing and austempering cycles and resultant microstructures are presented. This is followed by sections discussing the mechanical properties, advantages, limitations, machinability, process variants, and applications of austempered ductile iron (ADI). Information on the growth of premachined ADI components is also provided. Further, the chapter describes two slightly different systems for austempering: atmospheric-salt and salt-salt systems. Finally, it presents general guidelines for component designers, casting manufacturers, and heat treaters to apply ADI more widely and with improved success.

The coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is used for three-dimensional inspection of both in-process and finished parts. This chapter provides a detailed account of the operating principles, measurement techniques, capabilities, and applications of CMMs. The types of CMMs are described. Steel is broadly classified as plain-carbon steels, low-alloy steels, and high-alloy steels. This chapter begins by describing microconstituents of low- and medium-carbon steel, including bainite and martensite.
