Abstract
Gaseous ferritic nitrocarburizing, like salt bath nitrocarburizing, involves the introduction of carbon and nitrogen into steel in order to produce a thin layer of iron carbonitride and nitrides, the "white layer" or compound layer, with an underlying diffusion zone containing dissolved nitrogen and iron (or alloy) nitrides. This chapter first presents the development and principles of the process. It then discusses the properties of gaseous ferritic nitrocarburized components. The chapter also presents the applications for the ferritic nitrocarburizing process. It provides an overview of the safety considerations.

Abstract
Modern gears are made from a wide variety of materials. Of all these, steel has the outstanding characteristics of high strength per unit volume and low cost per pound. Although both plain carbon and alloy steels with equal hardness exhibit equal tensile strengths, alloy steels are preferred because of higher hardenability and the desired microstructures of the hardened case and core needed for the high fatigue strength of gears. This chapter provides an overview of the key considerations involved in the selection and application of heat treating processes for alloy steel gears and serves as an introduction to the subsequent chapters in this book.

Abstract
This chapter begins with information on the historical development of aluminum alloy castings. It then covers the basic factors involved in the selection of a casting process. This is followed by sections describing the various categories of casting processes and their variants: expendable mold gravity-feed casting, nonexpendable (permanent) mold gravity feed casting, and pressure die casting. Next, the chapter describes the technologies used to produce premium engineered castings and when such castings may be relevant. The chapter concludes with descriptions of other process technologies used with castings, including metallurgical bonding, metal-matrix composites, and hot isostatic pressing.

Abstract
This article explains how malleable iron is produced and how its microstructure and properties differ from those of gray and ductile iron. Malleable iron is first cast as white iron then annealed to convert the iron carbide into irregularly shaped graphite particles called temper carbon. Although malleable iron has largely been replaced by ductile iron, the article explains that it is still sometimes preferred for thin-section castings that require maximum machinability and wear resistance. The article also discusses the annealing and alloying processes by which these properties are achieved.

Abstract
This chapter reviews failure aspects of structural ferrous powder metallurgy (PM) parts, which form the bulk of the PM industry. The focus is on conventional PM technology of parts in the density range of 6 to 7.2 g/cc. The chapter briefly introduces the processing steps that are essential to understanding failure analysis of PM parts. This is followed by a section on case hardening of PM parts. The methods used for analyzing the failures are then discussed. Some case studies are given that illustrate different failures and the methods of prevention of these failures.

It begins by describing the problems of enhancing the fatigue resistance of machine components.
