Abstract
This chapter covers the practical aspects of machining, particularly for turning, milling, drilling, and grinding operations. It begins with a discussion on machinability and its impact on quality and cost. This chapter begins with a review of some of the terms used in the gear industry to describe the design of gears and gear geometries. It then discusses the types of gears that operate on parallel shafts, intersecting shafts, and nonparallel and nonintersecting shafts. Next, the processes involved in the selection of gear are discussed, followed by information on the basic stresses applied to a gear tooth, the strength of a gear tooth, and the most widely used gear materials. When the presence of a contaminant is suspected, the failure analysis team must find and eliminate the contaminant source, which can be obvious or quite subtle. In contrast to most plastic deformation processes, the shape of a machined component is not uniquely defined by the tooling. Instead, it is affected by complex interactions between tool geometry, material properties, and frictional stresses and is further complicated by tool wear. This chapter covers the mechanics and tribology of metal cutting processes. It discusses the factors that influence chip formation, including tool and process geometry, cutting forces and speeds, temperature, and stress distribution. It reviews the causes and effects of tool wear and explains how to predict and extend the life of cutting tools based on the material of construction, the use of cutting fluids, and the means of lubrication. It presents various methods for evaluating workpiece materials, chip formation, wear, and surface finish in cutting processes such as turning, milling, and drilling. Specimen preparation is the first step that determines the quality of the microstructural information that can be obtained using optical microscopy. This chapter describes the sample preparation methods that are applicable to most types of composite materials containing short discontinuous or continuous fibers. The sample preparation methods cover documentation and labeling of samples, sectioning the composite, clamp-mounting composite samples, mounting composite samples in casting resins, and the addition of contrast dyes to casting resins. Information on the molds used for mounting composite materials is provided. The steps recommended to achieve a good mounted specimen without voids or specimen pull-out are also described. The chapter discusses the processes for clamping mounted composite samples in automated polishing heads and mounting composite materials for hand polishing. A summary of the mounting technique is also included.

This chapter focuses on the first category, and particularly on semiconductor lasers. The discussion begins with the basics of semiconductor lasers and the material science behind some causes of device failure.
