Abstract
The technology of fabricating composite hardware and structures by filament winding has evolved empirically through the development and manufacturing of specific components. This chapter reviews areas of technology used in building composite parts and discusses the processes from which the current technology was derived. The discussion covers quality control requirements for composite fabrication technology and cleanliness standards in the workplace. It describes technology developed for specific components, including satellites struts, aircraft hydraulic cylinders, drill pipe, drive shafts, couplings, and cryogenic tubing.

Abstract
During cyclic spin tests, the turbine disc in an aircraft engine broke apart with a loud noise, followed by a fire. Based on a detailed examination and the results of SEM fractography and hardness measurements, failure analysts concluded that a locking plate became dislodged due to the shearing of the screws that hold it in place. They also provided recommendations to remediate the problem.

Abstract
The load-displacement capabilities of a mechanical press are determined largely by the design of its drive mechanism or, more precisely, the linkage through which the drive motor connects to the slide. This chapter discusses the primary types of linkages used and their effect on force, velocity, and stroke profiles. It begins by describing the simplest drive configuration, a crankshaft that connects directly to the slide, and a variation of it that uses eccentric gears to alter the stroke profile. It then discusses the effect of adding a fixed link, knuckle joint, or toggle to the slider-crank mechanism and how gear ratios, component arrangements, and other design parameters affect slide motion. The chapter also explains how to assess load and energy requirements, time-dependent characteristics, and dimensional accuracy and discusses overload protection, shutheight adjustment, and slide counterbalancing as well.

Abstract
This chapter discusses the design and operation of electromechanical servo-drive presses. It begins by comparing the operating flexibility of servo-press drives with that of their conventional counterparts. It then explains the difference between direct-drive and belt and screw-driven servo presses and describes some of the innovations and improvements made possible with high-torque servo motors. The chapter provides examples of how servo presses are used in blanking, warm forming, and other applications and compares the operating characteristics of two 1100-ton presses, one driven by servo motors, the other by a mechanical crank.

Abstract
This chapter describes an investigation that was conducted to determine why quill shafts were failing prematurely in gear boxes on aircraft engines. The investigation focused on the splines in a splined bore. Visual examination showed that the splines were heavily worn and covered with red powder on one end. Investigators also observed blueing, an effect of overheating. Based on these observations and the results of SEM imaging, it was concluded that the splines in the spline bore were wearing out for lack of lubrication.

A driven gear in the gear box of an aircraft engine fractured after a 40 h test run. The driving gear and gear shaft were also damaged. Based on the results of fractography, chemical analysis, metallography, and hardness testing, the fracture was caused by a fatigue crack initiating at the corner of the inner rim near an inclusion. The report recommends the use of a cleaner material and more carefully controlling case hardening process.
