Abstract
This chapter begins with a review of some of the terms used in the gear industry to describe the design of gears and gear geometries. It then discusses the types of gears that operate on parallel shafts, intersecting shafts, and nonparallel and nonintersecting shafts. Next, the processes involved in the selection of gear are discussed, followed by information on the basic stresses applied to a gear tooth, the strength of a gear tooth, and the most widely used gear materials. Further, the chapter briefly reviews gear manufacturing methods and the heat treating processing steps including prehardening processes, through hardening, and case hardening processes.

Abstract
Metal removal processes for gear manufacture can be grouped into two general categories: rough machining (or gear cutting) and finishing (or high-precision machining). This chapter discusses the processes involved in machining for bevel and other gears. The chapter describes the type of gear as the major variable and discusses the machining methods best suited to specific conditions. Next, the chapter provides information on gear cutter material and nominal speeds and feeds for gear hobbing. Further, it describes the cutting fluids recommended for gear cutting and presents a comparison of steels for gear cutting. The operating principles of computer numerical control and hobbing machines are also covered. This is followed by sections that discuss the processes involved in grinding, honing, and lapping of gears. Finally, the chapter provides information on the superfinishing of gears.

Abstract
This chapter summarizes the various kinds of gear wear and failure and how gear life in service is estimated and discusses the kinds of flaws in material that may lead to premature gear fatigue failure. The topics covered are alignment, gear tooth, surface durability and breakage of gear tooth, life determined by contact stress and bending stress, analysis of gear tooth failure by breakage after pitting, and metallurgical flaws that reduce the life of gears. The chapter briefly reviews some components in the design and structure of each gear and/or gear train that must be considered in conjunction with the teeth to enhance fatigue life.

Abstract
Mechanical treatments such as grinding and shot peening are often employed in the production of case-carburized parts. Grinding, besides restoring precision, removes carbide films, internal oxidation, and high-temperature transformation products. Shot peening strengthens component surfaces and induces a stress state that increases fatigue resistance. This chapter describes both processes as well as roller burnishing. It explains how these treatments are applied and how they influence the microstructure, properties, and behaviors of case-hardened components. It also addresses process challenges, particularly in regard to grinding.

Abstract
This chapter covers mechanical properties, microstructures, chemical compositions, manufacturing processes, and engineering of gating practices for several applications of gray, white, and alloyed cast irons. It begins with a description of material standards, followed by a section providing information on the practice of stress relieving. Next, the chapter details various ways of eliminating slag entrainment while designing gating and venting systems. Several factors related to the establishment of the optimum pouring rate and time are then covered. Further, the chapter discusses the technology of unalloyed or low-alloyed gray iron castings and white iron and high-alloyed cast irons. Finally, it describes the casting defects that are associated with cast iron and the processes involved in solving these defects. Coil design for induction heating has been developed and refined over time based on the theoretical principles applied in practice to several simple inductor geometries such as the classical solenoidal coil. This chapter reviews the fundamental considerations in the design of inductors and describes some of the most widely used coils and common design modifications. Specialty coil designs for specific applications are also discussed. The chapter concludes with sections devoted to coil fabrication and design of power-supply leads.

Abstract
Fatigue fractures are generally considered the most serious type of fracture in machinery parts simply because fatigue fractures can and do occur in normal service, without excessive overloads, and under normal operating conditions. This chapter first discusses the three stages (initiation, propagation, and final rupture) of fatigue fracture followed by a discussion of its microscopic and macroscopic characteristics. The relationship between stress and strength in fatigue is explained. The next section provides information that may help the uninitiated to appreciate some of the problems of laboratory fatigue testing and of the fatigue process itself. Finally, information on types and statistical aspects of fatigue is provided along with examples.

The most common contributors covered include component design, selection of proper hardenability, increased residual stress, dimensional stability, and generation of quenching and grinding cracks. They also include insufficient case hardness and improper core hardness, influence of surface carbon content and grain size, internal oxidation, structure of carbides, and inclusion of noncarbide. Abstract
The conversion of feedstock into a shape involves the application of heat and pressure, and possibly solvents. This chapter discusses the operating principle, advantages, limitations, and applications of such shaping processes, namely additive manufacturing, cold isostatic pressing, die compaction, extrusion, injection molding, slip casting, slurry processes, and tape casting. Information on equipment setup, requirements, and the various factors influencing these processes are described. In addition, the chapter provides information on novel approaches and processing costs applicable to these shaping processes.
