Abstract
Stainless steel retains strength and has excellent oxidation resistance from room temperature to nearly 1000 deg C relative to competitive materials. This chapter focuses on the high-temperature oxidation of stainless steel by oxygen or water vapor. It begins by discussing the thermodynamic conditions and electrochemical nature of oxidation and providing information on transient oxidation. This is followed by a description of Wagner's theory for metal oxidation. The volatile nature of Cr 2 O 3 is then reviewed. The chapter further discusses the causes and preventive measures of spalling and cracking of oxide scale. It ends with a section providing information on oxidation behaviors under less-oxidizing atmospheres.

Abstract
This chapter focuses on the effects of microscopic organisms and the by-products they produce on the electrochemical corrosion of metals. It begins by considering the characteristics of organisms that allow them to interact with the corrosion processes, the mechanisms by which organisms can influence the occurrence or rate of corrosion, and the types of corrosion most often influenced by microbes. The chapter then discusses the formation of biofilms on the surface of metals. This is followed by a list of industries most often reported as being affected by microbiological corrosion, along with the organisms usually implicated in the attack. The types of attack that have most commonly been documented are illustrated through generalized case histories for different classes of alloys. The chapter also describes the general approaches to be taken to prevent microbiologically influenced corrosion. It ends with some information on the inhibition of corrosion by the action of bacteria.

Abstract
This chapter discusses the effects of metallurgical variables on dealloying corrosion. It begins by describing the processes involved in dealloying of metal alloys in aqueous environments. This is followed by a discussion on the morphology of porous dealloyed structures below and above the critical potential. Some features experimentally observed for dealloying systems are then considered. The chapter concludes by briefly reviewing the proposed mechanisms for the formation of porous metals, namely ionization-redeposition mechanism, surface diffusion mechanism, volume diffusion mechanism, and percolation model of selective dissolution.

This chapter concentrates on very low-temperature martensitic transformations, which are of great concern for cryogenic applications and research. The principal transformation characteristics are reviewed and then elaborated. The material classes or alloy systems that exhibit martensitic transformations at very low temperatures are discussed. Abstract
A working knowledge of diffusion is necessary to understand and predict the behavior of metals and alloys during manufacturing and in certain types of service. This chapter covers the fundamentals of diffusion in solids and some of the applications in which diffusion plays a role. It discusses the mechanisms behind interstitial, substitutional, grain boundary, and surface diffusion, the derivation and use of Fick’s laws, and the basic principles of diffusion coating processes, including carburizing, nitriding, nitrocarburizing, cyaniding, carbonitriding, boriding, aluminizing, siliconizing, chromizing, vanadizing, and titanizing. It also discusses diffusion bonding and presents several approaches for dealing with oxide barrier problems.

This chapter discusses the factors that must be considered when selecting a lubricant for sheet metal forming operations. It begins with a review of lubrication regimes and friction models. It then presents a simple model of a galvanically coupled electrode, in which the metal is represented as an array of anode and cathode reaction surfaces. The chapter goes on to develop the related theory of mixed electrodes, showing how it can be used to predict corrosion rates based on measured potentials and current densities, polarization characteristics, and physical variables such as anode-to-cathode area ratios and fluid velocity. Abstract
This chapter takes a practical approach to the problem of stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) in stainless steels, explaining how different application environments affect different grades of stainless steel. It describes the causes of stress-corrosion cracking in chloride, caustic, polythionic acid, and high-temperature environments and the correlating effects on austenitic, ferritic, duplex, martensitic, and precipitation hardening stainless steels and nickel-base alloys. It also discusses the contributing effects of sensitization and hydrogen embrittlement and the role of composition, microstructure, and thermal history. Sensitization is particularly detrimental to austenitic stainless steels, and in many cases, eliminating it will eliminate the susceptibility to SCC. The chapter includes an extensive amount of data and illustrations.
