Abstract
This chapter explains how the authors assessed the potential risks of creep-fatigue in several aerospace applications using the tools and techniques presented in earlier chapters. It begins by identifying the fatigue regimes encountered in the main engines of the Space Shuttle. It then describes the types of damage observed in engine components and the methods used to mitigate problems. It also discusses the results of analyses that led to changes in design or approach and examines fatigue-related issues in turbine engines used in commercial aircraft.

Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of the production and use of titanium and its significance as an engineering material. It begins by identifying important deposits and ores and assessing current and future production capacities and how they align with global consumption trends. It then describes the physical and mechanical properties of pure titanium and numerous grades of wrought titanium alloys and explains how they compare with other aerospace materials in terms of processing complexity and cost. The chapter also includes information on extractive metallurgy, current and emerging processes, product forms, and related costs.

Abstract
This chapter is a detailed account of the history of development of titanium and its modern applications in the aerospace market. It begins by discussing the attempts made to produce titanium metal. This is followed by a discussion on the invention of a process for making titanium by William Kroll. Various studies on the properties on titanium and research programs related to the production of titanium sponge and titanium metal products are then described. The chapter concludes with a discussion of titanium use in jet engines.

Of the various heat treating processes currently available, five are frequently used to heat treat alloy steel gears. These processes...
Abstract
Modern gears are made from a wide variety of materials. Of all these, steel has the outstanding characteristics of high strength per unit volume and low cost per pound. Although both plain carbon and alloy steels with equal hardness exhibit equal tensile strengths, alloy steels are preferred because of higher hardenability and the desired microstructures of the hardened case and core needed for the high fatigue strength of gears. This chapter provides an overview of the key considerations involved in the selection and application of heat treating processes for alloy steel gears and serves as an introduction to the subsequent chapters in this book.
