Series: ASM Technical Books

Abstract
This chapter examines the microstructure of metallic components produced by casting and compares them with microstructures achieved by means of powder metallurgy. It shows how metals and alloys obtained by various processing routes differ in terms of grain size, secondary phases, oxide and carbide dispersions, porosity, dendritic formation, and properties such as hardness, toughness, tensile strength, and yield strength.

Abstract
Heat treatment is the most common way of altering the mechanical, physical, and even chemical properties of steels. This chapter describes the changes that occur in carbon and low-alloy steels during conventional heat treatments. It explains how austenite decomposition largely defines the final microstructure, and how the associated phase transformations are driven by nucleation and growth processes. It describes diffusionless and diffusive growth mechanisms and provides detailed information on the properties, structure, and behaviors of the transformation products produced, namely martensite and bainite. It also discusses the formation of austenite, the control and measurement of austenitic grain size, the characteristics of ferritic microstructures, and the methods used to classify ferrite morphology.

Abstract
Austenite is the key to the versatility of steel and the controllable nature of its properties. It is the parent phase of pearlite, martensite, bainite, and ferrite. This chapter discusses the importance of austenite, beginning with the influence of austenitic grain size and how to accurately measure it. It then describes the principles of austenite formation and grain growth and examines several time-temperature-austenitizing diagrams representing various alloying and processing conditions. The chapter concludes with a discussion on hot deformation and subsequent recrystallization.

Abstract
Titanium, like other metals, can be shaped, formed, and strengthened through deformation processes. This chapter describes the structural changes that occur in titanium during deformation and how they can be controlled. It discusses the role of slip, dislocations, and twinning, the effect of grain size and crystal orientation, the concept of texture strengthening, and the principles of strain hardening and superplasticity. It also discusses the effect of annealing and the difference between recrystallization and neocrystallization processes.

Abstract
Annealing, a heat treatment process, is used to soften metals that have been hardened by cold working. This chapter discusses the following three distinct processes that can occur during annealing: recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth. The types of processes that occur during recovery are the annihilation of excess point defects, the rearrangement of dislocations into lower-energy configurations, and the formation of subgrains that grow and interlock into sub-boundaries. The article also discusses the main factors that affect recrystallization. They are temperature and time; degree of cold work; purity of the metal; original grain size; and temperature of deformation. The types of grain growth discussed include normal or continuous grain growth and abnormal or discontinuous grain growth.

Abstract
This chapter discusses the development and use of microstructure models for optimizing superalloy forging operations. It describes how the processes that control grain structure evolution during hot working were used in model formulation and compares predicted microstructures with experimental results.

Abstract
This chapter examines the structural changes that occur in high-carbon steels during austenitization. It describes the effect of heating time and temperature on the production of austenite and the associated transformation of ferrite and cementite in eutectoid, hypoeutectoid, and hypereutectoid steels. It discusses the factors that influence the kinetics of the process, including carbon diffusion and the morphology of the original structure. It describes the nucleation and growth of austenite grains, the effect of grain size on mechanical properties, and the difference between coarse- and fine-grained steels. The chapter also discusses grain-refinement processes and some of the effects of overheating, including sulfide spheroidization, grain-boundary sulfide precipitation, and grain-boundary liquation.

Abstract
This chapter describes how the phases are arranged into desired microstructures during the heat treatment of tool steels. It describes the microstructural changes that are the objectives of the austenitizing, quenching, and tempering steps of tool steel hardening. The chapter covers austenite composition, retained austenite, and austenite grain size and grain growth. It provides information on the hardness and hardenability of tool steel. The chapter reviews some of these concepts and describes the microstructural appearance of the products of diffusion-controlled transformation of austenite. The role that diffusion-controlled phase transformations play relative to the hardenability of high-carbon and alloy tool steels is then emphasized. It presents general considerations of transformation diagrams, Jominy curves, and the hardenability of tool steels. The factors related to the kinetics and stabilization of martensite transformation are also covered. It briefly reviews selected aspects of the changes that evolve during tempering.

Abstract
Nickel-base alloys are generally used in harsh environments that demand either corrosion resistance or high-temperature strength. This article first describes the general welding characteristics of nickel-base alloys. It then describes the weldability of solid-solution nickel-base alloys in terms of grain boundary precipitation, grain growth, and hot cracking in the heat-affected zone; fusion zone segregation and porosity; and postweld heat treatments. Next, the article analyzes the welding characteristics of dissimilar and clad materials. This is followed by sections summarizing the various types and general weldability of age-hardened nickel-base alloys. The article then discusses the composition, welding metallurgy, and properties of cast nickel-base superalloys. Finally, it provides information on the welding of dissimilar metals, filler metal selection for welding clad materials and for overlay cladding, service conditions during repair, and welding procedural idiosyncrasies of cobalt-base alloys.
