Abstract
This chapter describes the conditions under which environmental degradation is likely to occur in polymer matrix composites and the potential damage it can cause. It discusses the problems associated with moisture absorption and exposure to solvents, fuels, ultraviolet radiation, lightning strikes, thermal oxidation, and extreme temperatures. It also discusses the factors that influence flammability.

Abstract
This article describes the basic approaches to improving the fire resistance of a polymeric material, considers the burning process on a microscale and macroscale, and discusses various test methods for determining the flammability characteristics of polymeric materials. Test methods are classified in two ways: by fire response characteristics and by particular applications of polymeric materials.
