Abstract
Three bearing bosses from the cover of scrap shears were sent in for examination. They had torn off the base plate to which they had been welded by fillet welds all around. Two of these were examined. They showed entirely the same symptoms. The bosses had broken away on three sides along the welds. The cleaved fractures in the burned notches propagated partially above and partially below several incipient cracks which may have been fatigue fractures.
