In the present work, a metal-polymer composite coating containing Al and ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) was prepared on the surface of a polymer matrix composite (PMC) using a detonation spraying process. The microstructure and bond strength of the as-prepared coatings were analyzed. The bonding mechanism of the coatings, especially the deposition behavior of the Al and EVA particles on the PMC surface is discussed. Results had shown that detonation spraying technique enables the deposition of metal-polymer coatings directly onto the PMC surface under precise process control. The preparation of metal-polymer composite coating on PMC via detonation spraying process presents promising application as an interlayer for the surface metallization of PMC.

This study investigates a new zirconia-based ceramic for potential use in thermal barrier coatings. In the experiments, Sc 2 O 3 -Gd 2 O 3 -Yb 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 (SGYZ) powder was synthesized by coprecipitation and calcination, then agglomerated and sintered to facilitate spraying. The structure, morphology, and phase stability of the powder and plasma-sprayed SGYZ coatings were analyzed and thermal conductivity was measured. Test results show that the powders and coatings have good phase stability even after 500 h at 1400 °C and do not undergo tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transition upon cooling. Plasma-sprayed SGYZ also has a lower thermal conductivity than YSZ, which is currently used in gas turbine engines.

In this study, suspension HVOF spraying is used to deposit TiO 2 nanoparticles on 304 stainless steel substrates. Spray parameters are varied, including spray distance and number of passes, to determine their effect on friction and wear properties as well as surface topography, microstructure, and phase composition. The spray parameters used, the microstructures observed, and the wear mechanisms of the nanostructured TiO 2 coatings are described in the paper.

In this paper, the nanostructured zirconia thermal barrier coatings were prepared on GH3030 high temperature alloy surface by plasma spraying process. The nanostructured agglomerated ZrO 2 feedstock was used as initial powders, and the NiCoCrAlY alloy as bond coating material. The relationship between bonding strength and spray current, secondary gas flow and spray distance were analyzed. The optimum parameters were acquired by orthogonal experimental design methods. The microstructures and phase structures of nanostructured zirconia thermal barrier coating were investigated thoroughly by SEM, TEM and X-Ray.

The brittleness of intermetallic compounds severely hampers their appliance in industry as high temperature structural materials. In order to make use of their good qualities and avoid the influence of their disadvantages, this paper put forward another method on the application of intermetallic compounds--using as coatings on the surface of structural materials. Lots of experiments have been done on Fe-Cr-Al intermetallic compounds and excellent coatings were acquired by high temperature in-situ reaction process. The coating is compact and bonded well with substrate. And the result of experiment shows that it has wonderful corrosion resistance to molten zinc.

Recent developments in aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy have drawn much attention from the semiconductor characterization community. Two new developments in transmission electron microscopy, image aberration correctors and probe aberration correctors, are discussed in term of their applications in characterizing gate oxide dielectrics for the IC industry.
