The pore microstructure of thermal spray coatings can be described as a combination of interlamellar pores, intralamellar cracks, and volumetric globular pores. This complex pore morphology can strongly influence the properties of the deposited layer. In this paper, the authors use a multiple small-angle neutron scattering (MSANS) technique to characterize the pore system in NiCrAlY layers. It is shown that the inter-lamella system is of utmost importance. Paper includes a German-language abstract.

The aim of this work is to determine how to control the microstructure and tribological properties of HVOF-sprayed TiC composite coatings. The powders used in the study were made by the SHS process and contained a mixture of TiC and either FeCr20Ni10 or FeCr18Ni15Mo3, which serve as a binder and give the sprayed coatings additional corrosion resistance. The composites produced were assessed based on metallographic examination and wear testing. The results show how the structure of the SHS powder changes due to the injection molding process and how the tribological properties of the HVOF layers are influenced by spraying conditions and the formation of mixed carbides. This paper investigates the microstructure and properties of TiC-based nanocrystalline coatings produced by HVOF and VPS processes. It assesses the extent to which nanocrystalline cermet powders can be tailored for specific applications using high-energy milling and the commercial viability of HVOF sprayed coatings made from such powders. Plasma sprayed ceramic composites are being used in a growing number of applications despite requiring post-treatment to obtain desired properties. This paper evaluates plasma sprayed alumina-titania coatings both as-deposited and after microwave processing. In each case, the physical (porosity), mechanical (hardness and adhesive tensile strength), and functional (wear resistance) properties are measured. It is shown that the evaluation techniques can be used to determine the quality of the layers at any stage of production. The experimental procedures are briefly described and the results discussed using multiple illustrations. Paper includes a German-language abstract.
