This work evaluates HVOF sprayed cermet coatings as an alternative to galvanic hard chrome plating for applications requiring corrosion and wear protection. WC-10Co-4Cr layers were deposited on different types of steel using commercially available HVOF systems. The coatings were then assessed based on their friction, wear, adhesion, and corrosion behaviors, which are shown to compare favorably with those achieved using a commercial hard chrome plating system. The paper also sheds light on how salt spray attacks protective surface layers at the edges, causing corrosion that propagates along the interface with the substrate. When coating edges were protected, exposure to salt spray atmospheres did not jeopardize the bond strength of any (cermet or chrome) coating tested. Paper includes a German-language abstract.

Intermetallic TiAl coatings were applied to ferritic steels using plasma and HVOF spraying methods. The specimens were then placed in reducing sulfidizing atmospheres for high-temperature corrosion testing. This paper describes the experiments that were performed and presents and analyzes the results. In general, for the reasons given, the coatings performed better in an Ar-H 2 -H 2 S-atmosphere than in one containing CH 4 . Paper text in German.

This paper reviews the principles of cathodic corrosion protection and the different ways zinc anodes are applied to reinforced concrete through wire arc spraying. It also explains how the lifetime of zinc coatings can be extended with an organic topcoat and presents related test data. Paper includes a German-language abstract.

A commercial air carrier has replaced the chrome plating on line-of-sight landing gear installed on several aircraft with HVOF sprayed WC-Co-Cr coatings. Pending the results of ongoing testing and service evaluations, the carrier plans to switch to HVOF coatings on all line-of-site landing gear and possibly other structural and engine components. This paper discusses the infrastructure that will be necessary to build, qualify, and maintain a high-velocity oxyfuel spraying facility that will serve one of the largest fleets of aircraft in the world. Paper includes a German-language abstract.
