Abstract

High Velocity Oxy Fuel spraying (HVOF) is a widespread thermal spray process with various applications in almost all industry branches. Currently there is an important trend that the HVOF method is used as an alternative for hard chrome plating because of the excellent coating properties and the substantially lower environmental pollution. First applications e. g. ball valves, journals and parts in hydraulic systems of earthmoving machinery have been already launched with success. The paper describes HVOF coatings which are used or which are potential candidates as hard chrome plating alternative respectively. The advantages and disadvantages of the HVOF process compared to hard chrome plating are discussed. Furthermore possibilities of the HVOF process as hard chrome replacement in the aircraft industry are investigated. The first results of laboratory and in-service tests are presented.
