Abstract
The currently distinctive thermal spray applications in the surface modifying technology in Japan are introduced. Applying inventive combinations of coating materials and spraying processes have developed many unique applications. In terms of thermal spraying processes, in particular, low pressure plasma spray, atmospheric plasma spray, and high velocity oxy/fuel flame spray are employed. The profiles of industrial applications that are performed mainly by coating contract job shops are presented. For the typical coating materials, alumina, and zirconia as oxides, tungsten or chromium carbide cermet as composite materials, and special alloys were selected. The performance of coatings includes wide range field such as electrical insulation, erosion resistance, corrosion, wear resistance and so on. The current status of thermal spray market in Japan is also introduced.
