Magnetic flux controllers are commonly used on induction heat treating coils for local heat pattern control, efficiency improvement, cycle time reduction, etc. There are three types of materials used as magnetic flux controllers: laminations, ferrites and soft magnetic composites (SMC). Recently, much progress has been made in the field of SMC's, which has led to their use in heat treating applications previously dominated by laminations or which used no controller at all. The improvements to SMC's include new materials, improved application techniques, and protective treatments.
