Abstract
This article describes weathering and environmental factors that contribute to degradation in plastics, including temperature variations, moisture, sunlight, oxidation, microbiologic attack, and other environmental elements. It presents a general overview of aging factors, their effects on plastic materials, and the accelerated test methods that can be used to estimate the reaction of a plastic component during actual use. The article focuses on the determination of service temperature as it indicates the ability of a material to retain a certain property, when exposed to elevated temperatures for an extended period of time. It concludes by describing various degradation processes, namely, thermal degradation, thermal oxidative degradation, photooxidative degradation, environmental corrosion, and chemical corrosion and discussing the ways of detecting these degradation processes.

Abstract
Independent verification of coating system performance can be based on laboratory testing and/or field exposure. Qualification testing is a critical component to coating system selection. This article focuses on performance evaluations that are used to prequalify coating systems, namely, facility-specific, industry-specific, coating-type-specific, or a combination of these. It describes the standard laboratory tests used to generate performance data, namely, physical, compositional, chemical exposure, and application characteristics tests. The pros and cons of using manufacturer-generated data versus independently generated data are discussed. The article provides information on accelerated corrosion/weathering testing and nuclear level 1/level 2 service coatings qualification. It also describes the procedures for establishing minimum performance requirements and for determining when requalification testing may be required.

This article discusses the various factors that affect the corrosion performance of electroplated coatings. It describes the effects of environment and the deposition process on substrate coatings. The article provides a discussion on the electrochemical techniques capable of predicting the corrosion performance of a plated part. Abstract
This article describes the processes involved in photochemical aging and weathering of polymeric materials. It explains how solar radiation, especially in the UV range, combines with atmospheric oxygen, driving photooxidation and the development of unstable photoproducts that cause various types of damage when they decompose, including the scission of carbon bonds and polymer chains. The article illustrates some of the degradation reactions that occur in different polymers and presents an overview of the strategies used to prevent such reactions or otherwise mitigate their effects.

Abstract
Weathering steels contain deliberate additions of alloying elements intended to increase the atmospheric corrosion resistance of steel. This article provides an overview of atmospheric corrosion testing. It describes the estimation of the atmospheric corrosion behavior of weathering steels by two methods such as short-term exposure tests and calculation of a corrosion index based on the steel composition. The article highlights some generalities about corrosion mechanisms. Based on the mechanism of atmospheric corrosion resistance of weathering steel, working rules for creating the protective oxide film have evolved. The article also provides case histories that illustrate both the violations of these rules and suggestions on how to avoid certain maintenance problems that may be encountered with weathering steels.

This article discusses the applications and use of salt spray (fog) testing used to test the resistance of aluminum alloys to exfoliation corrosion. There are two basic types of salt-spray/fog corrosion tests: static condition tests and cyclic condition tests. The article provides a discussion of these tests and indicates the significant differences in each type test used in the combination of weathering and corrosion testing procedures. It also provides information on the test specimen preparation for spray (fog) corrosion tests. Industry specific standards for test specimen procedures often reference the ASTM standards as a basis. The article includes various ASTM standards that describe several cleaning procedures used prior to testing. It describes the major components of a corrosion test chamber.

Porcelain enamels are glass coatings applied primarily to products or parts made of sheet steel, cast iron, or aluminum to improve appearance and to protect the metal surface. This article provides information on the types and properties of the porcelain enamels and frits for porcelain enameling. It describes the corrosion resistance of the porcelain enamels in a variety of environments. Evaluation of properties of the porcelain-enameled products to control specifications and quality of porcelain-enamel coatings is also reviewed. Accelerated life testing and aging methodologies are increasingly being used to generate engineering data for determining material property degradation and service life (or fitness for purpose) of plastic materials for hostile service conditions. This article presents an overview of accelerated life testing and aging of unreinforced and fiber-reinforced plastic materials for assessing long-term material properties and life expectancy in hostile service environments. It considers various environmental factors, such as temperature, humidity, pressure, weathering, liquid chemicals (i.e., alkalis and acids), ionizing radiation, and biological degradation, along with the combined effects of mechanical stress, temperature, and moisture (including environmental stress corrosion). The article also includes information on the use of accelerated testing for predicting material property degradation and long-term performance.

Abstract
Although aluminum alloys are inherently corrosion resistant, there are many operating environments where they require additional protection. This article describes the conditions under which aluminum is prone to corrode and explains how to prevent it through the addition of conversion coatings and paints. It addresses some of the more common corrosion mechanisms, including corrosion driven by pH extremes, pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, galvanic corrosion, and filiform corrosion. The article also describes in-plant as well as field application procedures for cleaning and coating, and discusses the advantages and limitations of the various materials and chemicals used.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based coatings are typically used in outdoor applications that require exceptionally high performance and excellent long-term exterior durability with little maintenance. This article provides a background of three fluoropolymers most commonly used for coatings, namely, PVDF, polyvinyl fluoride, and polytetrafluoroethylene. Bridges and highways are core components of transportation system and range from pavements with earth, gravel, or stone covered by a thin bituminous surface course to a continually reinforced Portland cement concrete (PCC) roadway with or without a bituminous wear course. This article provides information on bridges and dowels and the reinforcement used in PCC roadways that suffer from corrosion. An overview is provided on the rise in awareness of the corrosion issues affecting bridges and highways. Abstract
Several factors contribute to marine-atmospheric corrosion with the local environment being the single most important factor. Therefore, assessing a local environment, which is essential to reduce the gross expenditure, is assisted by modeling of the local environment and by a set of corrosion standards proposed by the International Standards Organization (ISO). This article focuses on the important variables associated with atmospheric corrosion in marine atmospheres, namely, moisture, temperature, winds, airborne contaminants, alloy content, location, and biological organisms along with their corresponding assessing methods. It also examines the ISO CORRAG program for modeling the corrosion rate of atmospheric corrosion that is represented as equations modeling.
