Abstract
Total joint replacement in orthopedic surgery can be achieved by excision, interposition, and replacement arthroplasty. This article details the most common materials used in total replacement synovial joints: metals, ceramics, and ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The principal physical properties and tribological characteristics of these materials are summarized. The article discusses pin-on-disk experiments and pin-on-plate experiments for determining friction and wear characteristics. It explains the use of various types of joint simulators, such as hip joint simulators and knee joint simulators, to evaluate the performance of engineering tribological components in machine simulators. The article concludes with a section on the in vivo assessment of total joint replacement performance.

This article provides a brief introduction to lubrication as a method to reduce friction between two surfaces. It discusses the surface characteristics of parts and explores how lubrication helps separate two contacting surfaces and thereby decreases the coefficient of friction. The article details the classifications of lubrication regimes, namely, boundary, mixed, hydrodynamic, and elastohydrodynamic lubrications. It discusses the various types of lubricant materials and additives, including liquid lubricants, solid lubricants, gaseous lubricants, greases, green lubricants, and nanomaterials. The article also reviews the properties of lubricants. It describes the tribological evaluation of lubricants, including stribeck test, four-ball test, block-on-ring test, pin-in-vee test, and reciprocating motion test.

Abstract
The influence of friction and wear on the function and structure of tribological systems is determined by various types of tribological tests. This article introduces the general categories of tribological testing and describes the basic objectives of testing. It reviews the results of tribological tests, where the system-dependent characteristics of friction and wear data can be expressed in different forms, such as tribographs, transition diagrams, and tribomaps. A summary of various methods of surface analysis is presented in a table. The article discusses the relationship between wear and reliability in terms of exponential distribution, Weibull distribution, and gamma distribution. It concludes with information on the effects of interaction on failure probability.

Abstract
This article considers the main characteristics of wear mechanisms and how they can be identified. Some identification examples are reported, with the warning that this task can be difficult because of the presence of disturbing factors such as contaminants or possible additional damage of the worn products after the tribological process. Then, the article describes some examples of wear processes, considering possible transitions and/or interactions of the mechanism of fretting wear, rolling-sliding wear, abrasive wear, and solid-particle erosion wear. The role of tribological parameters on the material response is presented using the wear map concept, which is very useful and informative in several respects. The article concludes with guidelines for the selection of suitable surface treatments to avoid wear failures.

It is a multidisciplinary subject covering the mechanics of contacting surfaces, their roughness characteristics, lubrication, and material behavior under normal load as well as in traction. This article focuses on well-established and widely accepted analytical methods and design and analysis charts for dealing with some of the issues in the area of engine and power train tribology. It provides a discussion on lubricant rheology and the prediction of lubricating film thickness. The article reviews the frictional power loss in piston-cylinder conjunctions, engine bearings, and transmission and differential gearing systems.

Abstract
Stainless steels are essential for the modern industrial civilization because of their corrosion resistance, especially in the chemical, petrochemical, and food industries. This article discusses the classification of the various types of stainless steels, including martensitic, ferritic, austenitic, duplex (ferritic-austenitic), and precipitation-hardening stainless steels. It presents a checklist of characteristics to be considered in selecting the proper type of stainless steel for a specific application. The article also outlines the need to promote the formation of an effective protective passive layer in stainless steels. It discusses hardness, fatigue and fretting properties, tribological properties, wear resistance, and corrosion-wear process of the S-phase layer. The article describes two thermochemical nitriding techniques of stainless steels: plasma-assisted nitriding techniques and non-plasma assisted nitriding processes. This article focuses on friction, lubrication, and wear of internal combustion engine parts, improvements in which provide important gains in energy efficiency, performance, and longevity of the internal combustion (IC) engine systems. It discusses the types, component materials, and Friction and Wear Control of IC engine. The article explains the process of friction reduction by surface textures or coatings. It provides information on surface hardening of iron and steel, which is commonly employed for engine and powertrain components such as crankshafts, cams, and cylinder liners. The article also discusses advanced surface engineering technologies, such as diamondlike carbon coatings and surface texture technology. Information on thermal-spray methods that have led to improvements in engine components is also provided. Lasers evolved as a versatile materials processing tool due to their advantages such as rapid, reproducible processing, chemical cleanliness, ability to handle variety of materials, and suitability for automation. This article focuses on state-of-the-art laser applications to improve tribological performance of structural materials in lubricated and nonlubricated environments. It discusses the fundamentals of various laser materials interactions and reviews laser-based surface-modification strategies, including laser surface heating and melting, laser-synthesized coatings, and laser-based design approaches such as laser patterning and dimpling. Laser-surface modification of novel materials, such as high-entropy alloys and metallic glasses, is explored. The article provides an overview of hybrid techniques involving laser as a secondary tool, as well as a discussion on the improved capabilities of laser surface engineering for tribological applications by means of integrated computational process modeling.

Abstract
This article describes two variations of carbon-base coatings: diamondlike carbon (DLC) coatings and polycrystalline diamond (PCD) coatings. It discusses the basics of a few deposition methods as they apply to industrially relevant coatings. The methods include deposition of tungsten-containing hydrogenated amorphous carbon films, deposition of tetrahedral amorphous carbon films, and deposition of silicon-incorporated hydrogenated amorphous carbon films. The most common deposition technologies for diamond films are also discussed. The article provides information on surface preparation for DLC and diamond deposition. It also provides a discussion on the coating composition and structure, mechanical and tribological properties, and applications of DLC and diamond coatings. The quality control techniques for DLC and diamond coatings are specified to meet customer requirements and ensure repeatable quality.

It discusses the classification of active tribological pairs, namely, amphiarthosis joints and diarthosis joints. The article details the classification of total knee replacement, depending on the type of mechanical stability, including nonconstrained knee replacement, semiconstrained knee replacement, and constrained knee replacement.
