Abstract
Ceramic-forming processes usually start with a powder which is then compacted into a porous shape, achieving maximum particle packing density with a high degree of uniformity. This article compares and contrasts several forming processes, including mechanical consolidation, dry pressing, cold isostatic pressing, slip casting, tape casting, roll compaction, extrusion, and injection molding. It describes the advantages, equipment and tooling, and material requirements of green machining, the machining of ceramics in an unfired state with the intent of producing parts as close to as possible to their final shape. The article also provides useful information on drying methods, shrinkage, and defects as well as the removal of organic processing aids such as dispersants, binders, plasticizers, and lubricants.

This article provides an overview of the steps that are used in ceramics processing and related mechanical design considerations. It discusses various design approaches, such as the empirical design, the deterministic design, and the probabilistic design. The article presents a general process design flowchart for ceramic processing. Information on traditional ceramics and advanced ceramics is also provided. The article describes various ceramic forming processes, such as wet processing, plastic forming, dry processing, and machining. The factors for evaluating different ceramic forming processes are summarized in a table. The article discusses vitrification and sintering that generally pertain to ceramic firing and concludes with a discussion on firing process factors.

The ultrasonic additive manufacturing (UAM) process consists of building up solid metal objects by ultrasonically welding successive layers of metal tape into a three-dimensional shape with periodic machining operations to create detailed features of the resultant object. This article provides information on the materials, welding parameters, process consumables, procedures, and applications of the UAM. It describes the methods for determining metallurgical and mechanical properties of solid metal parts to assess the range of materials and applications for which the process is suited. These methods include peel testing, push-pin testing, and microhardness/nanohardness testing. The article also reviews the issues to be addressed in maintaining UAM fabrication quality.

This article describes the types of fabrics and preforms used in the manufacture of advanced composites and related selection, design, manufacturing, and performance considerations. The types of fabrics and preforms include unidirectional and two-directional fabrics; multidirectionally reinforced fabrics; hybrid fabrics; woven fabric prepregs; unidirectional and multidirectional tape prepregs; and the prepreg tow. The article discusses three major categories of tape manufacturing processes, namely, the hand lay-up, machine-cut patterns that are laid up by hand, and the automatic machine lay-up. It provides a description of the two classes of prepregs. These include those that are suitable for high-performance applications and suitable for lower-performance molding compounds.

Abstract
Wet lay-up using hand or spray techniques is one of the simplest methods of combining a fiber reinforcement with a solidifying resin to form a composite structure. This article describes several wet lay-up processes - including contact molding, spray molding, vacuum bag molding, and autoclave molding - suited for making parts on open-faced molds using polyester and vinyl ester resins. The article also provides information on mechanically assisted lay-up which can be automated to alleviate some of the manual work.

Thermal spray coating involves certain precoating operations, such as cleaning, surface preparation, and masking, that are critical to the overall quality of the coating system. In addition to these, certain other elements are considered prior to the coating, namely, customer requirements, coating function, part geometry, substrate metallurgy, structure, and thermal history. This article describes the ideal performance of various low-temperature and high-temperature fuel cells that depends on the electrochemical reactions that occur between different fuels and oxygen. Low-temperature fuel cells, such as polymer electrolyte, alkaline, and phosphoric acid, and high-temperature fuel cells, such as molten carbonate and solid oxide, are discussed. The article contains tables that provide information on the evolution of cell-component technology for these fuel cells. Metal-matrix composites (MMCs) are a class of materials with potential for a wide variety of structural and thermal applications. This article discusses the mechanical properties of MMCs, namely aluminum-matrix composites, titanium-matrix composites, magnesium-matrix composites, copper-matrix composites, superalloy-matrix composites, and intermetallic-matrix composites. It describes the processing methods of discontinuous aluminum MMCs which include casting processes, liquid-metal infiltration, spray deposition and powder metallurgy. Abstract
The majority of currently used additive manufacturing (AM) processes are solidification based (SAM). Another class of AM processes consists of those that rely on deformation (DAM) to place material instead of solidification. Although SAM processes are much more widely used, as research and development continues in DAM processes, they are becoming increasingly attractive, especially for the AM of metals. This article discusses some of the more widely used DAM processes, namely ultrasonic additive manufacturing, cold spray process, and friction stir welding, focusing on their applications, advantages, and limitations.

Abstract
This article presents information regarding the use of protective coatings in municipal potable water systems, including raw water collection and transmission, water treatment plants, and treated water distribution. It provides useful guidance for the selection and use of protective coatings in these municipal water systems. The most commonplace corrosion-damage mechanisms are highlighted. The article describes the most common materials of construction found in municipal water systems, namely, cast iron, ductile iron, carbon steel, precast concrete cylinder pipe and reinforced concrete pipe, prestressed concrete tanks, and stainless steel. It provides information on the most common generic coating systems used for new steel tanks and water storage tanks. It concludes with a discussion of quality watch-outs when selecting or using protective coatings in municipal water systems.
