Abstract
The appearance, morphology, and extent of the casting skin are the consequence of mold-metal interface interaction. This article discusses the classification of the mold-metal interaction based on severity: mild mold-metal interaction and severe mold-metal interaction. The casting surface exhibits some roughness, which depends on the molding materials used in the casting process. The article describes the effects of the casting skin in spheroidal graphite (SG) and compact graphite (CG) irons, as well as the mechanism of casting skin formation. It discusses the physics of liquid metal penetration in sand molds and concludes with information on the effect of sand additives and mold coatings.

It discusses the process parameters and variables affecting surface interactions, including temperature, speed, reduction, stiffness, and dynamic response of equipment. The article reviews the determination of friction coefficient using laboratory monitoring methods, indirect measurements, and the inverse method. It considers the determination of the interface heat-transfer coefficient by using the ring test and computer simulations. The article describes the behavior of oxide scale on the surface of hot metal undergoing thermomechanical processing. Abstract
This article focuses on transport phenomena and modeling approaches that are specific to vapor-phase processes (VPP). It discusses the VPP for the synthesis of materials. The article reviews the basic notions of molecular collisions and gas flows, and presents transport equations. It describes the modeling of vapor-surface interactions and kinetics of hetereogeneous processes as well as the modeling and kinetics of homogenous reactions in chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The article provides information on the various stages of developing models for numerical simulation of the transport phenomena in continuous media and transition regime flows of VPP. It explains the methods used for molecular modeling in computational materials science. The article also presents examples that illustrate multiscale simulations of CVD or PVD processes and examples that focus on sputtering deposition and reactive or ion beam etching.

Abstract
This article focuses on the principles and applications of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for the analysis of elemental and chemical composition. The discussion covers the nomenclature, instruments, and specimen preparation process of XPS. Some of the factors pertinent to the calibration of materials for accurate measurements using XPS are provided, along with some aspects of the accuracy in quantitative analysis by XPS. Abstract
This article first describes surface forces, and the methods of measuring them, followed by a discussion on adhesion. It discusses the instrumental requirements and techniques, including Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), used for the measurement of surface forces. Measurements of surface roughness, with AFM, can provide a precise picture of surface roughness and can be used as input for contact mechanics computer models. The article also describes microscale adhesion and adhesion measurement methods using microelectromechanical systems technologies. It reviews certain considerations used for the measurement of adhesion, such as fundamental adhesion measurements, history dependence and sample preparation, and practical adhesion measurements. The article describes various arrangements that can be employed in adhesion tests.

Abstract
Sputtering is a nonthermal vaporization process in which the surface atoms are physically ejected from a surface by momentum transfer from an energetic bombarding species of atomic/molecular size. It uses a glow discharge or an ion beam to generate a flux of ions incident on the target surface. This article provides an overview of the advantages and limitations of sputter deposition. It focuses on the most common sputtering techniques, namely, diode sputtering, radio-frequency sputtering, triode sputtering, magnetron sputtering, and unbalanced magnetron sputtering. The article discusses the fundamentals of plasma formation and the interactions on the target surface. A comparison of reactive and nonreactive sputtering is also provided. The article concludes with a discussion on the several methods of process control and the applications of sputtered films.

This article describes the nitriding methods of titanium alloys such as plasma nitriding and gas nitriding. It focuses on the interaction of titanium alloys, interaction of titanium with nitrogen, and the interaction of titanium with oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen. Abstract
This article describes the methods of wear measurements and a model of corrosive wear in mill atmospheres. It explains the polarization curves of pyrrhotite and high-carbon low-alloy steel in a quartzite slurry with examples. The surfaces of pyrrhotite in contact with mild steel or stainless steel affected by galvanic interaction are discussed. The article contains a table that lists the results of laboratory marked ball wear tests for three types of steel balls in wet grinding of magnetic taconite. It also provides information on the mechanism of electrochemical interaction and relative significance of corrosion and abrasion in wear. Galvanic interactions in multielectrode systems are reviewed. The article presents a case history on the material selection for grinding balls to minimize corrosion loss and the adverse effect on flotation.

The detrimental effects of erosion have caused problems in a number of industries. This article describes the processes involved in erosion of ductile materials, brittle materials, and elastomers. Some examples of erosive wear failures are given on abrasive erosion, liquid impingement erosion, cavitation, and erosion-corrosion. This article introduces the basic principles of nonlinear material-wave interaction, the origin of intrinsic nonlinearity in intact solids, and the main mechanisms of excess nonlinearity in damaged metals. It describes the measurement methods for nonlinear ultrasonic materials characterization and flaw-detection. The article schematically illustrates the instrumentation used for measurements of longitudinal wave and Rayleigh surface acoustic waves.
