Abstract
This article provides a general introduction on casting processes and design techniques. It discusses the process steps and methods of the main categories of shape casting methods, namely, expendable molds with permanent patterns, expendable molds with expendable patterns, and metal or permanent mold processes. The article lists the general guidelines of geometry in casting design. It describes the three separate contractions that are a result of cooling: liquid-liquid contraction, solid-solid contraction, and liquid-solid contraction. Factors influencing the solidification sequence of simple shapes, such as T-sections, X-sections, and L-sections, are discussed. The article also presents an overview of geometric factors that influence heat transfer and transport phenomena. It concludes with a description of the structure and properties of castings.

Abstract
In cast iron, residual stresses normally arise due to hindered thermal contraction, meaning that they are associated with the presence of constraints that prevent the natural, free volumetric variation of the material upon solid-state cooling. This article explains their mechanism of formation by introducing the scalar relation, known as the additive strain decomposition. The main factors influencing casting deformation are volume changes during solidification and cooling, phase transformations, alloy composition, thermal gradients, casting geometry, and mold stability. The article reviews the dimensional stability in cast iron and discusses macroscopic and microscopic stresses in cast iron.

Abstract
Castability of alloys is a measure of their ability to be cast to a given shape with a given process without the formation of casting defects. This article describes the factors that limit fluidity as well as experimental methods for measuring fluidity of various alloys. Various tests designed for measuring the hot tearing tendency in alloys are discussed. The article also discusses the temperature dependence, criteria, and modeling of hot tearing.

Abstract
Casting offers a great amount of component design flexibility. This article discusses six casting design parameters that drive the geometry of casting design from a process standpoint. It provides information on the design of junctions and addresses considerations of secondary operations in design. The article describes the factors that control casting tolerances and presents specific tips for designing castings with uniform wall thickness, unequal sections, thin sections, economical coring, functional packaging, and core design. The article provides a framework for analyzing all manners of manufacturing as possible conversion candidates for casting. It concludes with a discussion on different metalcasting design projects.

This article describes low-temperature solid-state welding processes in relation to the interlayer fabrication method, welding method, and welding parameters. The interlayer fabrication method is used to produce vacuum coated interlayers, electrodeposited interlayers, and foil interlayers. The application of phase diagrams is instrumental in solid-state transformations for the processing and heat treatment of alloys. A unary phase diagram plots the phase changes of one element as a function of temperature and pressure. This article discusses the unary system that can exist as a solid, liquid, and/or gas, depending on the specific combination of temperature and pressure. It describes the accomplishment of conversion between weight percentage and atomic percentage in a binary system by the use of formulas. The article analyzes the effects of alloying on melting/solidification and on solid-state transformations. It explains the construction of phase diagrams by the Gibbs phase rule and the Lever rule. Analysis of bifilms provides a simple, powerful, and elegant concept to explain many features of the metallurgy of castings. This article describes the effects of bifilms in metals. Mechanisms for the entrainment of bifilms are reviewed. The article describes the effect of furling and unfurling on mechanical properties of the solidified cast metal. It provides a discussion on the mechanisms of unfurling to determine the casting properties of the metals. These include gas precipitation, shrinkage, linear contraction, dendrite pushing, and nucleation and growth of intermetallics. The article also describes the role of bifilm defects in fracture.

This article discusses the mechanical properties of soft-interlayer solid-state welds and the implications of these behaviors to service stress states and environments. It illustrates the microstructure of as-deposited coatings and solid-state-welded interlayers. The article reviews factors that affect the tensile loading of strength of soft-interlayer welds: the interlayer thickness, the interlayer strain, and the interlayer fabrication method. It also provides information on stress-corrosion cracking of interlayers and stress behavior of these interlayers during shear and multiaxial loading.
