Abstract
This article presents the modes of heat transfer and the stages of cooling during quenching. It provides an overview on the wetting process and then focuses on the evaluation of heat transfer during quenching. It also presents the challenges of thermal process evaluation based on an inverse heat conduction analysis. The article contains a compilation of best practice examples on heat transfer evaluation, which are intended to represent the practical aspects and applicability of the methods aiming the prediction of heat-transfer coefficients.

Abstract
Flow visualization is an important characterization process to not only understand uniformity of the interfacial cooling mechanisms, but also to characterize the overall impact of agitation on the uniformity of the overall cooling process. This article focuses on thermal flow simulation and visualization in the quenching process. The study presents the effect of bubbling, boiling, and breaking the steam film on the heat-transfer coefficient during the agitated quenching process.

Intensive quenching (IQ) is an alternative method of hardening steel parts. Two types of IQ methods are used in heat treating practice: IQ-2 and IQ-3. IQ-2 is implemented in IQ water tanks, which are usually used for batch quenching of steel parts. IQ-3 is conducted in single-part processing using high-velocity water flow IQ units. This article presents a detailed description of IQ technology, related equipment, and IQ applications. A review of intensive quench system design and processing is provided, including numerical design criteria, steel selection, quenchants, properties (especially optimal residual stress profiles). Several specific applications of intensive quenching are also provided.

This article presents the fundamentals of induction hardening (IH). It focuses on liquid quenching technology, but some specifics and brief comments are provided regarding alternative quenching media as well. The article provides a discussion on the following quench modes that can be applied in IH using liquid media: conventional immersion quenching, open spray quenching, flood quenching, and submerged quench or submerged spray quench. It also focuses on four primary methods of IH: scan hardening, progressive hardening, single-shot hardening, and static hardening.

Abstract
Spray quenching (or jet impingement) is the most common technique employed to improve the uniformity of heat removal and break the vapor layer, allowing for a high cooling rate to be achieved. This article presents the heat transfer characteristics of quenching a hot surface, which can be expressed by the boiling and quench curve. It discusses three major spray parameters that have a substantial role in the quantification of spray cooling performance: droplet size, droplet velocity, and volumetric flux. The article also presents the available models and correlations to predict the cooling rate in spray quenching of hot surfaces during different boiling phases. It then discusses the effect of surface roughness on spray cooling performance.

Gas quenching is one of the standard quenching technologies used in fabricating metallic components. The gas quenching process is usually performed at elevated pressures and is therefore mostly referred to as high-pressure gas quenching (HPGQ). This article presents the physical principles of HPGQ and also presents the equipment for gas quenching. The article describes the three types of gas that are mainly used for HPGQ: nitrogen, helium, and argon. It provides the mathematical model for heat fluxes and temperatures during HPGQ. The article also presents typical industrial applications for HPGQ in addition to equipment process and safety.

Abstract
This article provides the basics of overall quench process distortion. It describes the influence of quenching processes on the generation of distortion. Examples for the distortion behavior of different types of components are presented. Then, comparisons between different quenching processes are provided. The article presents some possibilities for minimization of shape changes by the quenching process itself. Several suggestions are given for quenching processes in evaporating fluids. An example is provided for out-of-roundness reduction for rings by well-defined inhomogeneous quenching in a gas nozzle field. Another example shows how intensive and high-speed quenching can help to reduce the bending of shafts with an asymmetrical cross-section. The last example shows the result when external loads and nonsymmetric quenching act together. The article also presents test samples for the judgment about distortion potential arising from heat treatment equipment.

Abstract
Mathematical models have been used for over five decades in industrial heat-treating operations. Most of these modeling efforts have emanated from academia or research institutes, with the primary approach of mathematically capturing heat-treating processes and validating quality predictions. In this article, a contrarian but more realistic scenario is considered, where two industrial problem descriptions become the starting point. The technical complexity of the industry problem has been elaborated for a deeper understanding of the issue along with elaboration of the approach and potential methods for determining a solution. Then, quantitative analyses of practical industrial problems are demonstrated. Finally, the potential shift in these approaches with the advent of Industry 4.0 is outlined.

The fundamental objective of quenching is to preserve, as nearly as possible, a metastable solid solution formed at the solution heat treating temperature, by rapidly cooling to some lower temperature, usually near room temperature. This article provides an overview of the factors used to determine a suitable cooling rate and the appropriate quenching process to develop a suitable cooling rate. It discusses the three distinct stages of quenching: vapor stage, boiling stage, and convection stage. The article reviews the factors that affect the rate of cooling in production operations. It discusses the quenchants that are used in quenching aluminum alloys, namely, hot or cold water and polyalkylene glycol. The article also describes the racking practices for controlling distortion and the level of residual stresses induced during the quench.

Quenching refers to the rapid cooling of metal from the solution treating temperature, typically between 465 and 565 deg C (870 and 1050 deg F) for aluminum alloys. This article provides an overview on the appropriate quenching process and factors used to determine suitable cooling rate. It describes the quench sensitivity and severity of alloys, quench mechanisms and the different types of quenchants used in immersion, spray, and fog quenching. The article provides a detailed description of the quench-factor analysis that mainly includes residual stress and distortion, which can be controlled by proper racking. It concludes with information on agitation and the quench tank system used in the quenching of aluminum alloys.

Quenching is a widely used technique to strengthen titanium alloys. This article presents the metallurgical and structural background underlying the specific techniques applied in the quenching of various titanium alloys, and the ways to control and reduce residual stresses induced from quenching or other thermal or mechanical processes. It discusses the types and microstructures of titanium alloys, namely, alpha, alpha-beta, and beta alloys, and describes the general effects of the various heat treatments. The article provides information on quenching media, quenching rate, section size, and martensitic transformation in quenched titanium alloys. It shows how residual stresses in titanium alloys are evaluated and controlled. Finally, the article describes the stress-relief treatments used to reduce residual stresses.

Abstract
Induction heating for hardening of steels has advantages from the standpoint of quenching because parts are individually processed in a controlled manner. This article provides information on the effect of agitation, temperature, hardening, residual stresses, and quenching media, on quenching. It also describes various quenching methods for steel induction heat treating, namely, spray quenching, immersion quenching, self or mass quenching, and forced air quenching. This article describes the mechanisms and characteristics of heat transfer in the quenching of steel. This article describes the characterization of boiling heat transfer, including pool boiling, forced convective boiling, and rewetting, which plays a key role in defining the heat-extraction characteristics of a liquid quenchant. This article provides a discussion on probes for laboratory tests and resultant curves of industrial quenching processes. It describes the scope of the tests, and the calculation of heat-transfer coefficient (HTC) based on the tests. The article highlights the differences between the laboratory tests and characterization of industrial quenching processes. It reviews the importance of initial heat-flux density and first critical heat-flux density. The theoretical principle behind and the purpose of the temperature gradient method are discussed. The article provides information on the design of the probe, heat-extraction dynamics, and influence of wetting kinematics. It also includes discussions on the simplified 1-D temperature-distribution model, calculation of the HTC, and the finite-volume method for the heat-conduction equation.

The fluidized bed provides a means for exchanging heat between a metal part, the solid particles, and the fluidizing gas and which is viable for quenching. This article briefly considers the design aspects of the gas distributor, plenum, container, immersed cooling tubes and surface air spray cooling system in the quenching fluidized bed. It describes the fundamental factors affecting quenching power of the fluidized beds, namely, particle size, particle material, fluidizing gas composition, fluidizing gas flow rate, bed temperature and pressure, and the arrangement of quenched parts with respect to one another and to the bed. The article discusses the advantages, disadvantages, various applications and processes, including conventional batch quenching, two-step batch quenching, and continuous quenching of fluidized bed quenching, in detail.
