Abstract
Porcelain enamels are glass coatings applied primarily to products or parts made of sheet steel, cast iron, and aluminum to improve appearance and to protect the metal surface. This article describes the types of porcelain enamels, and details enamel frits for these materials. It provides a list of steels suitable for porcelain enameling and discusses the most important factors considered in the selection of steel for porcelain enameling. The article briefly presents the preparation methods of these materials for porcelain enameling and covers the methods, and furnaces of porcelain enameling. It examines the role of coating thickness, firing time and temperature, metal substrate, and color on the performance of enameled surfaces. The article concludes with a discussion on the properties of enameled surfaces, factors considered in process control, and test procedures for evaluating the quality of enameled surfaces.

Abstract
Ceramic and glass manufacturers take environmental regulations into consideration during all stages of the product cycle, from research and development to purchasing, processing, end use, and disposal. Ceramic and glass products are finding application in the construction industry and as raw materials for other processes. This article describes the recycling of in-process scrap and industrial wastes (fly ash, red mud, metallurgical waste, and other waste products), and applications of these recycled products. It focuses on environmental regulations such as Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and Clean Air Act. The Clean Air Act requires all states to meet minimum emissions standards for nitrogen-oxygen compounds, volatile organic compounds, and carbon monoxide.

Abstract
This article suggests procedures to increase the availability and function of patterns and tooling. It discusses the common expected failure mechanisms, such as erosion and fatigue, for dies and patterns. A successful maintenance program requires good record keeping for each tool. The article lists information required for the maintenance tooling record and preventive maintenance (PM) items from the North American Die Casting Association's publication E501. It concludes with information on objectives for proper storage of tools and patterns. The objectives are preventing tool degradation, safe workplace, easy location, proximity, and cataloging and tracking.

Abstract
There are huge numbers of publications and data available on ceramics, especially the basic types that cover their friction, wear, tribological mechanisms, high-temperature behavior, tribochemistry, and also lubrication conditions. This article summarizes the key overall research findings found in several comprehensive monographs. It discusses the types and properties of structural ceramics, as well as typical properties that govern the friction and wear of ceramics. The article reviews the superlow friction of silicon nitride and silicon carbide, and describes wear-protective hydrated tribochemical layers. It concludes with information on the tribological applications of structural ceramics and composites.

Abstract
The design process for ceramic materials is more complex than that of metals because of low-strain tolerance, low fracture toughness and brittleness. The application of structural ceramics to engineering systems hinges on the functional benefits to be derived and is manifested in the conceptual design for acceptable reliability. This article discusses the design considerations for the use of structural ceramics for engineering applications. It describes the conceptual design and deals with fast fracture reliability, lifetime reliability, joints, attachments, interfaces, and thermal shock in detailed design procedure. The article provides information on the proof testing of ceramics, and presents a short note on public domain software that helps determine the reliability of a loaded ceramic component. The article concludes with several design scenarios for gas turbine components, turbine wheels, ceramic valves, and sliding parts.

Abstract
Safety is an important consideration in all welding, cutting, and related work. This article discusses the basic elements of safety general to all welding, cutting, and related processes. It includes safety procedures common to a variety of applications. The most important component of an effective safety and health program is management support and direction. The article reviews the role of management, training, housekeeping, and public demonstrations in welding safety to minimize personal injury and property damage. It provides information on the safety measures for eye and face protection in various welding and cutting operations. Injuries and fatalities from electric shock in welding and cutting operations can occur if proper precautionary measures are not followed. The article discusses the electrical safety aspects to be considered for various welding and cutting operations.

Abstract
Hydroxyapatite (HA) is one of the most popular materials in tissue scaffold engineering due to its similarity to the nature of human bone; it accounts for more than half of the total weight of the latter. Selective laser sintering (SLS) is an additive manufacturing method that is used in producing tissue engineering parts from HA feedstocks. This article provides a brief overview of the process itself, along with a detailed review of HA-based tissue engineering applications using SLS. Discussion on the various polymer composites is presented. A detailed overview of selected publications on HA-based SLS studies is listed, which provides insight regarding technical aspects of processing HA powder feedstocks.

Abstract
The recreation industry covers a huge number of sports, games, and activities that take place in environments as diverse as the activities themselves. This article addresses the corrosive attack on recreational equipment, such as recreational boats, firearms, bicycles, playground equipment, and climbing gear. It discusses the procedures for base materials selection, surface treatments and coatings, and good practice of maintenance to mitigate corrosion while addressing other functional issues for a given piece of equipment.
