This article begins with a description of the advantages and disadvantages of thermal spraying. It provides a discussion on the importance of substrate processing prior to coating and the role of undercutting in repair. The article reviews the steps for substrate preparation, namely, cleaning, roughening, masking, and preheating. Information on the equipment and process variables of dry abrasive grit blasting are also provided. The article describes the roles of spray stream and the spray pattern for all thermal spray processes. It discusses the defects arising from poor temperature control and from the variables influencing the manipulation of the spray torch. The article concludes with helpful information on calculating the process efficiency of thermal spraying.

Abstract
Thermomechanical processing (TMP) refers to various metal forming processes that involve careful control of thermal and deformation conditions to achieve products with required shape specifications and good properties. This article describes TMP methods in producing hot-rolled steel and reviews how improvements in the strength and toughness depend on the synergistic effect of microalloy additions and on carefully controlled thermomechanical conditions. It discusses TMP variables and the general distinctions between conventional hot rolling and common types of controlled-rolling schedules. The article describes the metallurgical processes in grain refinement of austenite steel by hot working, such as recovery and recrystallization and strain-induced transformation. The grain refinement in high strength low alloy steel by alloy addition is also discussed. The article provides an outline on the key stages of deformation, and the required metallurgical information at each of these stages.

The processing of steel involves five distinct sets of texture development mechanisms, namely, austenite deformation, austenite recrystallization, gamma-to-alpha transformation, ferrite deformation, and static recrystallization during annealing after cold rolling. This article provides an introduction on crystallographic textures. It discusses the effects of austenite rolling and recrystallization on the texture and transformation behavior of recrystallized austenite and deformed austenite. The article illustrates the overall summary of the rolling and transformation behavior. It details cold-rolling textures, annealing textures, and recrystallization textures of steel samples. The article concludes with a summary of texture development during cold rolling and annealing.

It discusses the considerations in selecting fabrication or subsequent surface processing procedures to improve fatigue resistance in terms of their respective effects on fatigue performance. This article describes ironmaking and steelmaking practices (melt or liquid processing, including hot metal desulfurization) and discusses the evolution of these processes and their effects on steel properties. The physical chemistry of steelmaking may appear deceptively simple for integrated steel mill operations where ore from the ground is converted into steel. The various refining steps that occur in steelmaking are reviewed. The article also describes solid processing of steel, with emphasis on hot and cold rolling, thermomechanical processing, and annealing of flat steel products.

Abstract
This article describes microstructures and microstructure-property relationships in steels. It emphasizes the correlation of microstructure and properties as a function of carbon content and processing in low-alloy steels. The article discusses the iron-carbon phase diagram and the phase transformations that change the structure and properties at varying levels of carbon content. Microstructures described include pearlite, bainite, proeutectoid ferrite and cementite, ferrite-pearlite, and martensite. The article depicts some of the primary processing steps that result in ferrite-pearlite microstructures. It shows the range of hardness levels which may be obtained by tempering at various temperatures as a function of the carbon content of the steel. To reduce the number of processing steps associated with producing quenched and tempered microstructures, new alloying approaches have been developed to produce high-strength microstructures directly during cooling after forging.

After solidification and cooling, further processing and finishing of the castings are required. This article describes the general operations of shakeout, grinding, cleaning, and inspection of castings, with particular emphasis on automation technology. It illustrates the vertical core knockout machine and the A-frame core knockout machine and lists the advantages and disadvantages of these machines. The article describes the general factors in automated or manual gate removal process. It concludes with discussion on the various types of inspection, such as the liquid penetrant inspection, pressure testing, radiographic inspection, magnetic particle inspection, and ultrasonic inspection.

Abstract
Metal matrix composites (MMCs) can be synthesized by vapor phase, liquid phase, or solid phase processes. This article emphasizes the liquid phase processing where solid reinforcements are incorporated in the molten metal or alloy melt that is allowed to solidify to form a composite. It illustrates the three broad categories of MMCs depending on the aspect ratio of the reinforcing phase. The categories include continuous fiber-reinforced composites, discontinuous or short fiber-reinforced composites, and particle-reinforced composites. The article discusses the two main classes of solidification processing of composites, namely, stir casting and melt infiltration. It describes the effects of reinforcement present in the liquid alloy on solidification. The article examines the automotive, space, and electronic packaging applications of MMCs. It concludes with information on the development of select cast MMCs.

Semisolid metal (SSM) processing is a special die casting process, where partially solidified metal slurry is injected into a die cavity to form die cast components. This article discusses the flow behavior of an SSM slurry with emphasis on viscosity, rheological behavior, and yield stress. It illustrates the microstructural formation of semisolids under forced convection. The article concludes with an illustration that compares two SSM processes, namely, thixocasting and rheocasting.

Abstract
This article discusses the most common methods of melting steels, namely, electric arc and induction melting. It describes the classification of refractories by an index of the “basicity” of the slag formed on the steel surface. The article provides a discussion on the converter metallurgy, which includes melt refinement in argon oxygen decarburization (AOD) vessels and vacuum oxygen decarburization (VODC) in a converter vessel. It also discusses ladle metallurgy, which includes vacuum induction degassing, vacuum oxygen decarburization, and vacuum ladle degassing.

This article discusses metal powder processing via hot isostatic pressing (HIP) and HIP cladding when metal powders are being employed in the cladding process. It traces the history of the process and details the equipment, pressing cycle, and densification mechanisms for HIP. The article describes the available process routes for fabricating products using HIP and the steps involved in the production of a part via direct HIP of encapsulated gas-atomized spherical powder. It concludes with information on the microstructures of 316L stainless steel HIP powder metallurgy valve body and a list of the mechanical properties of several powder metallurgy alloys.

Vibroacoustic analysis of mechanical systems has an important role in the engineering discipline. This can be used as a monitoring tool to obtain insights about the condition of a system, identify its probable defects, and determine the time window that the maintenance should happen. This article introduces the basics of signal processing in time, frequency, and time-frequency domains. It focuses on statistical analysis of the time-domain data. Various measures of data distribution and variability are pointed out. Important signal-processing functions in the frequency domain are presented and explained with examples. The article discusses and clarifies the benefits of time-frequency domain based on short-time Fourier transform with some practical applications. The article presents the most frequently used statistical functions. It concludes with information on some real-world applications of vibroacoustic analysis.

This article discusses the application of friction stir processing (FSP) and friction surfacing for tribological components. It describes the three critical aspects involved in the application of FSP for near-surface material modifications intended for tribological applications. These include tools, processing parameters, and machines. The article also discusses the equipment and processing parameters for friction surfacing. It describes various hybrid stir processing techniques that involve preheating of the workpiece material, especially relatively hard and high-strength ones. The article presents a partial list of surface-modification methods based on FSP. The partial list includes surface hardening, surface composites, and additive coating. The article also provides information on generation of residual stresses in metallic materials and alloys form different variants of FSP.

It then examines various additives that promote uniformity at different stages of the process. After a description of the comminution process (wet and dry milling methods), it discusses batching and mixing operations and granulation methods. The article also deals with the effect of process variables and the steps involved in chemical synthesis, including preparation from solution and gas-phase reactions, filtration and washing, and powder recovery techniques.
