The basic elements of control design are safety, process control, process verification, machine control, productivity, repeatability, and ease of setup. Effective systems of quality control/quality assurance are essential for heat treating practices. This article provides information on process control modes, as well as on process signatures of some items that require control, monitoring, verifying, and logging methods. It provides information on programmable logic controllers that have become efficient in machine control and monitoring. The article describes possible noise issues, National Electric Code clearance requirements, monitoring requirements, and machine accuracy that need to be considered when designing induction equipment.

As additive manufacturing (AM) gains maturity as a manufacturing technique for production in many industrial sectors, inspection as a tool for quality control gains importance. This article is focused on the field of dimensional metrology, which is typically concerned with the verification of size, location, form, and surface topography of geometric features. This is split into two categories: geometric (size, location, form) and surface measurement (topography). The article also focuses on applicable inspection technologies, and it discusses the context within digital thread manufacturing. A case study on the Digital Inspection Requirements Enhancing Coverage and Traceability (DIRECT) is also presented.

It lists the various quality assurance factors considered for typical composite laminate lay-up process. The quality assurance for commercial applications is reviewed. Abstract
This article provides guidelines for the assessment of model quality in materials science and engineering. It discusses the fundamentals of model quality assessment and the calibration of mechanistic material models. The article reviews the considerations for the model verification during software implementation planning to identify suitable programs, software components, and programming languages. It describes the validity tests used in model validation, including boundary-value tests, degenerate problem tests, sensitivity tests, and benchmarking. The article also presents an example of model calibration, verification, and validation for the prediction of martensite start temperature of steels.

This article focuses on the axisymmetric 2.5-dimensional approach used in metal powder injection molding (PIM) simulations. It describes three stages of PIM simulations: filling, packing, and cooling. The article discusses the process features of numerical simulation of PIM, such as filling and packing analysis, cooling analysis, and coupled analysis between filling, packing, and cooling stages. It explains the experimental material properties and verification for filling, packing, and cooling stages in the PIM simulations. The article presents simulation results from some of the 2.5-dimensional examples to demonstrate the usefulness of the computer-aided engineering analysis and optimization capability of the PIM process.

Abstract
Forgings are classified in various ways, beginning with the general classifications open die and closed die. They are also classified according to how they are made; such as hammer upset forgings, ring-rolled forgings, and multiple-ram press forgings; and in terms of the close-to-finish factor or amount of stock that must be removed to satisfy the dimensional and detail requirements of the finished part. In addition to types and classifications, the article discusses critical design factors and ways to ensure that the resulting forgings measure up to metallurgical, mechanical property, and dimensional accuracy requirements. The responsibility for design verification is vested in material control, which depends on the proper application of drawings, specifications, manufacturing process controls, and quality assurance programs. The article addresses each of these areas as well as related topics; including stress-induced fatigue failure, tolerances, machining allowances; and the fundamentals of hammer and press forgings, hot upset forgings, and hot extrusion forgings.

This article describes the basic functions that should be included when considering the relationship of computer-aided design (CAD)/computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and machining. These include design, analysis, drafting, process planning, part programming, program verification, part machining, and inspection. The article provides information on hardware, data base, interfaces, and benefits of integrating machining with the CAD/CAM system of a manufacturing plant. It also provides an overview of direct, computer and, distributed numerical control, which are devoid of a number of problems inherent in conventional numerical control.

This article discusses the attempts made by the industry to create sensing approaches for modeling a process, part, and chemistry and kinetics. It reviews microwave curing of thick-section composites and the resin cure sensors that are used for resin cure monitoring. These include dielectric cure sensors, fiberoptics-based resin cure sensors, ultrasonics-based resin cure sensors, and dosimetry-based resin cure sensors. The article provides information on the resin cure control flow sensing, flow modeling, flow mapping, and resin flow. It addresses some practical issues in sensing resin cure and flow.

The article provides an overview of the various types of testing machines: gear-driven or screw-driven machines and servohydraulic machines. It examines force application systems, force measurement, and strain measurement. The article discusses important instrument considerations and describes gripping techniques of test specimens. It analyzes test diagnostics and reviews the use of computers for gathering and reducing data. Emphasis is placed on universal testing machines with separate discussions of equipment factors for tensile testing and compressing testing. The influence of the machine stiffness on the test results is also described, along with a general assessment of test accuracy, precision, and repeatability of modern equipment.

Abstract
This article provides an overview of the models of two induction heating devices, namely, induction crucible furnace (ICF) and induction furnace with slits, or segmented and water-cooled induction furnace with cold crucible (IFCC). These devices are used for melting with skull formation of low-conductivity materials such as glasses and oxides. The article presents the governing equations and boundary conditions for ICF and IFCC modeling. It includes a discussion on three electromagnetic field models in IFCC, namely, two-dimensional (2-D), quasi-three-dimensional, and three-dimensional (3-D) models. The article provides information on the simulation of skull formation in IFCC, and elucidates the transient axisymmetrical 2-D model and the transient 3-D model, including the primary results achieved for both glasses and skull formation.

This article discusses continuum modeling, which is the most relevant approach in modeling grain growth, densification, and deformation during sintering. Continuum plasticity models are frequently used to describe the mechanical response of metal powders during compaction. The article illustrates the typical procedure for computer simulation for press and sinter process. It describes the procedure to obtain the material properties based on the generalized Shima-Oyane model. The article presents a wide variety of tests, accounting for data on the grain growth, densification, and distortion where these data help in the development of a constitutive model for sintering simulation. Finally, the article provides information on the simulation approaches used to optimize die compaction and sintering.

This article begins with discussion on forgeability and the factors affecting the forgeability of aluminum and aluminum alloys. It describes the types of forging methods and equipment and reviews critical elements in the overall aluminum forging process: die materials, die design, and die manufacture. The article discusses the critical aspects of various manufacturing elements of aluminum alloy forging, including the preparation of the forging stock, preheating stock, die heating, lubrication, trimming, forming and repair, cleaning, heat treatment, and inspection. It concludes with a discussion on the forging of advanced aluminum materials and aluminum alloy precision forgings.
