Abstract
Steel sheet is often coated in coil form prior to fabrication to save time, reduce production costs, and streamline operations. This article examines the most common precoating methods and provides a metallurgical understanding of how they impact the manufacturability, performance, and service life of the host material. The article covers metallic coatings, including zinc, aluminum, zinc-aluminum alloys, tin, and terne; pretreatment or phosphate coatings; and preprimed and painted finishes based on organic coatings.

... prepriming or a naturally pressurized system may be the only good solution at the present time to the gravity pouring of heavy steel castings using a bottom-teemed ladle. Perhaps the pouring of melts at any stage during the melting or casting process may ultimately be avoided in new designs of future...
Abstract
This article introduces filling and feeding concepts from the general perspective of what constitutes a good casting practice. It briefly reviews the concepts that may help to clarify and quantify objectives for more effective mold-filling designs. The article describes the preprimed filling system through various partial solutions to the prepriming approach. It discusses the six individual parts of the naturally pressurized filling system, namely, offset stepped pouring basin, sprue, sprue/runner junction, runner, gates, and feeding via feeders. The article also lists the key features of the system.

Abstract
Low-carbon steel sheet and strip are used primarily in consumer goods. This article discusses quality descriptors and mechanical properties of low-carbon steel sheet and strip and carbon and low-alloy steel plate. Alloy steel sheet and strip are used primarily for those special applications that require the mechanical properties normally obtained by heat treatment. Steel sheet is coated in coil form before fabrication either by the steel mills or by specialists called coil coaters. Porcelain enamels are glass coatings applied primarily to products or parts made of sheet steel, cast iron, or aluminum to improve appearance and to protect the metal surface.

Abstract
This article discusses the commonly encountered forms of automotive body corrosion. The corrosion forms include general or uniform corrosion, cosmetic or under-film corrosion, galvanic corrosion, crevice corrosion, poultice or under-deposit corrosion, and pitting corrosion. Corrosion-resistant sheet metals, such as electrogalvanized steel, hot dip galvanized steel, and hot dip galvannealed steel, are reviewed. The article provides information on the paint and sealant systems for corrosion control in automotive body applications.

Techniques for prepriming and countergravity flow are discussed in the article “Filling and Feeding System Concepts.” Pressurized versus Unpressurized Systems The difference between these two systems is in the choice of the location of the flow-controlling constriction...
Abstract
A gating system is the conduit network through which liquid metal enters a mold and flows to fill the mold cavity, where the metal can then solidify to form the desired casting shape. This article discusses various desirable design considerations for the gating system. Proper design of an optimized gating system will be made easier by the application of several fundamental principles of fluid flow. The article illustrates the Bernoulli's theorem, the law of continuity, and the effect of momentum. Most casting alloys are subject to the presence of particles that can deleteriously affect the physical properties and appearance of the casting. The article lists a variety of adverse effects of the particles. Ceramic filters, when correctly applied, can be relied on to trap particles before they can enter the casting cavity. The article concludes with information on the advantages and the types of the ceramic filters.

Abstract
Although aluminum alloys are inherently corrosion resistant, there are many operating environments where they require additional protection. This article describes the conditions under which aluminum is prone to corrode and explains how to prevent it through the addition of conversion coatings and paints. It addresses some of the more common corrosion mechanisms, including corrosion driven by pH extremes, pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, galvanic corrosion, and filiform corrosion. The article also describes in-plant as well as field application procedures for cleaning and coating, and discusses the advantages and limitations of the various materials and chemicals used.
