Abstract
Thermal spray coatings, along with certain proprietary sealants, are widely used in the paper manufacturing industry for corrosion and wear resistance and to impart special surface characteristics. This article discusses the steps involved in the paper manufacturing process. Most modern papermaking machines are based on variations of the Fourdrinier machine. The article describes four operational sections of the machine: forming, press, drying, and calendar. It provides an overview of the machine components where thermal spray coatings are used, namely, digesters, blow tanks, suction roll, center press rolls, yankee dryer rolls, calendar rolls, doctor/scalping blades, and cutting equipment.

This article discusses the methods of pulp production, pulp processing, pulp bleaching, and paper manufacturing. It describes various types of digesters, their construction materials, the corrosion problems encountered, and methods to protect these digesters from corrosion. The article examines the corrosion problems in high-yield mechanical pulping, sulfite process, neutral sulfite semichemical pulping, chemical recovery, tall oil plants, wastewater treatment, and recovery boilers. It explains the stages of chlorine-based and nonchlorine bleaching, process water reuse for elemental chlorine-free and nonchlorine bleaching stages, selection of material for bleaching equipment, developments in oxygen bleaching, and the use of highly corrosion-resistant materials for bleach plant equipment. The article reviews the materials used in the construction of paper machine components and specific corrosion problems that affect them. It discusses the composition and corrosive nature of white water. The article also addresses the corrosion and chemical recovery associated with kraft pulping liquors.

Products liability is a legal term for the action whereby an injured party (plaintiff) seeks to recover damages for personal injury or property loss from a producer and/or seller when the plaintiff alleges that a defective product caused the injury or loss. This article provides information on the legal bases for products liability and definitions for two types of defects: manufacturing defects and design defects. It summarizes other possible defects in design as well as preventive measures.

It begins by describing additive manufacturing prehistory, dating back to 1860, which is characterized by additive part creation without the use of a computer. The article then discusses the development of additive manufacturing processes occurring in the period from 1968 to 1984 and is followed by a section on modern additive manufacturing (1981 to the late 2000s). The article concludes by providing information on the growth of additive manufacturing since 2010 and the development of standards.

Structural applications for advanced ceramics include mineral processing equipment, machine tools, wear components, heat exchangers, automotive products, aerospace components, and medical products. This article begins with an overview of the wear-resistant applications and the parameters affecting wear of ceramics, namely, hardness, thermal conductivity, fracture toughness, and corrosion resistance. The next part of the article addresses temperature-resistant applications of advanced ceramics. Rapid prototyping (RP) is a field in manufacturing involving techniques/devices that produce prototype parts directly from computer-aided design models in a fraction of time. This article discusses the principles of RP and three major commercial processes, based on their layer creation method. These include selective cure layered processes, extrusion/droplet deposition processes, and sheet form fabricators. The article provides information on the three classes of RP, namely, voxel sequential volume addition, periphery cutting, and area sequential volume addition. This article discusses the commonly encountered forms of automotive body corrosion. The corrosion forms include general or uniform corrosion, cosmetic or under-film corrosion, galvanic corrosion, crevice corrosion, poultice or under-deposit corrosion, and pitting corrosion. Corrosion-resistant sheet metals, such as electrogalvanized steel, hot dip galvanized steel, and hot dip galvannealed steel, are reviewed. Abstract
Additive manufacturing is a collection of manufacturing processes, each of which builds a part additively based on a digital solid model. The solid model-to-additive manufacturing interface and material deposition are entirely computer-controlled. The traditional additive manufacturing applications have been used for low production runs of parts with complex shapes and geometric features. Additive manufacturing is also used for topology optimization and it impacts the process and supply chain. This article discusses processes, including vat photopolymerization, material jetting, powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, material extrusion, binder jetting, and sheet lamination.
