Abstract
The most effective design teams generally involve a clearly delineated group of individuals who work full time on the specified project from its beginning until market introduction. This article focuses on issues arising in using teams in a product design process. It provides special coverage on alternative roles for specialists, such as materials engineers or scientists, whose expertise is essential to the success of the project. The article discusses the types of teams exhibiting certain characteristics in the sales, accounting, and research departments and from the factory floor to the executive suite. The special characteristics of cross-functional development teams are discussed. The article reviews the staffing of a development team, including team leader, team members, and suppliers on the team. It describes the considerations for organizing a development team, and the role of development team specialists on balancing team needs.

Abstract
A concise and quantified specification is essential to developing suitable product concepts. This article describes an integrated set of structured methods for identifying the customer population for the product and developing a representation of feature demands. The structured methods include design task probing, customer needs analysis, functional decomposition, and competitive benchmarking for directly mapping customer statements to functional requirements.

Abstract
This article provides an overview of additive manufacturing (AM) methods, the three-dimensional (3D)-AM-related market, and the medical additive manufactured applications. It focuses on the current scenario and future developments related to metal AM for medical applications. The discussion covers the benefits of using 3D-AM technology in the medical field, provides specific examples of medical devices fabricated by AM, reviews trends in metal implant development using AM, and presents future prospects for the development of novel high-performance medical devices via metal 3D-additive manufacturing.

Abstract
Casting is one of the most economical and efficient methods for producing metal parts. In terms of scale, it is well suited for everything from low-volume, prototype production runs to filling global orders for millions of parts. Casting also affords great flexibility in terms of design, readily accommodating a wide range of shapes, dimensional requirements, and configuration complexities. This article traces the history of metal casting from its beginnings to the current state, creating a timeline marked by discoveries, advancements, and influential events. It also lists some of the major markets where castings are used.

Abstract
This article provides an insight into the cost estimation of painting projects for both contractors and others. The cost estimating methods include benchmarking, unit price estimating, developed pricing, market pricing, and critical path scheduling. The first step in developing an accurate estimate for an industrial painting contract is determining the scope of work. The article describes the method of calculating quantities of materials and labor, surface area takeoff, and equipment costs. It concludes by listing the forgotten costs and presenting information on coating condition assessment and determining selling cost.

Abstract
This article is dedicated to the fields of mechanical engineering and machine design. It also intends to give a nonexhaustive view of the preventive side of the failure analysis of rolling-element bearings (REBs) and of some of the developments in terms of materials and surface engineering. The article presents the nomenclature, numbering systems, and worldwide market of REBs as well as provides description of REBs as high-tech machine components. It discusses heat treatments, performance, and properties of bearing materials. The processes involved in the examination of failed bearings are also explained. Finally, the article discusses in detail the characteristics and prevention of the various types of failures of REBs: wear, fretting, corrosion, plastic flow, rolling-contact fatigue, and damage. The article includes an Appendix, which lists REB-related abbreviations, association websites, and ISO standards.

Abstract
This article presents an overview of an engineering design process. Though the process is extremely complex, distinct stages of design activities are identified and described. The article illustrates guided iteration methodology that helps in problem solving in design. It describes the engineering conceptual design and configuration design of special-purpose parts. It discusses the parametric design methods of the parts and best practices that are used by successful firms to achieve the goals of quality, cost, time-to-market, and marketing flexibility.

Clean streams of HDPE recyclate are now available, and new types of durable products have been developed...
Abstract
This article discusses postconsumer plastics recyclate quantities, the classification of plastics recycling into primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary categories, and how the life cycle of plastics is affected by recycling. The recycling processes of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which accounts for the largest percentage of plastic recycling, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastics, the other large-volume plastic recyclate, as well as vinyl resins and polycarbonate resins are described. The life cycle of plastics has four phases: poly formation, part fabrication, product service, and disposal. Landfilling is still the primary method of final disposal, and incineration is another option, but recycling has become a viable alternative. The article presents a comparison between secondary and tertiary recycling.
