Abstract
This article describes low-temperature solid-state welding processes in relation to the interlayer fabrication method, welding method, and welding parameters. The interlayer fabrication method is used to produce vacuum coated interlayers, electrodeposited interlayers, and foil interlayers. The article discusses welding methods, including uniaxial compression and hot isostatic pressing. The article provides information on the effect of base-metal surface finish on the tensile strength of joints solid-state welded using silver interlayers in tabular form and addresses the surface cleaning steps of base-metals.

Forge welding is a solid-state joining process in which the workpieces are heated to the welding temperature and then sufficient blows or force are applied to cause permanent deformation and bonding at the faying surfaces. Coextrusion welding is a solid-state process that produces a weld by heating two or more workpieces to the welding temperature and forcing them through an extrusion die. This article illustrates typical joint configurations used for manual and automatic forge welding applications. It provides information on the common metals welded by coextrusion welding, such as low-carbon steel, aluminum, copper, and copper alloys. The article also explains the common coextrusion behaviors.

Abstract
This article discusses the mechanical properties of soft-interlayer solid-state welds and the implications of these behaviors to service stress states and environments. It illustrates the microstructure of as-deposited coatings and solid-state-welded interlayers. The article reviews factors that affect the tensile loading of strength of soft-interlayer welds: the interlayer thickness, the interlayer strain, and the interlayer fabrication method. It also provides information on stress-corrosion cracking of interlayers and stress behavior of these interlayers during shear and multiaxial loading.

Soft-interlayer solid-state welds that join stronger base metals have unique mechanical properties that are of fundamental interest and may be of critical importance to designers. This article discusses the mechanical properties of soft-interlayer solid-state welds and the implications of these behaviors to service stress states and environments. It describes the tensile loading of soft-Interlayer welds in terms of the effect of interlayer thickness on stress, interlayer strain, time-dependent failure, effect of base-metal properties, and effect of interlayer fabrication method. Diffusion welding involves minimal pressurization, but relatively high temperatures and long periods of time. This article discusses the process variants of diffusion welding: solid-phase and liquid-phase processes. It describes the diffusion welding of carbon and low-alloy steels, high-strength steels, stainless steels, and aluminum-base alloys. The article provides a discussion on dissimilar metal combinations, such as ferrous-to-ferrous combinations, nonferrous-to-nonferrous combinations, ferrous-to-nonferrous combinations, and metal-ceramic joining.

This article describes the solid-phase and liquid-phase processes involved in diffusion bonding of metals. It provides a detailed discussion on the diffusion bonding of steels and their alloys, nonferrous alloys, and dissimilar metals. Ceramic-ceramic diffusion welding and a variation on this process in which ceramic powder compacts are simultaneously sintered and bonded are also discussed.

It details simple analytical tools to understand the variety of mechanisms that occur during resistance projection welding. Factors relating to the quality of solid projection are discussed, in addition to an explanation of the mechanisms of bonding for solid projection welding. The article reviews how these mechanisms are affected by heat balance, current profile, and mechanical characteristics of the welding equipment. Projection welding is a variation of resistance welding in which current flow is concentrated at the point of contact with a local geometric extension of one (or both) of the parts being welded. This article focuses on the process fundamentals, advantages, and limitations of projection welding and reviews the equipment used in the process. It discusses projection welding of copper and copper alloys, aluminum and aluminum alloys, and steels. The article provides several specifications and recommended weld schedules and practices for projection welding. It describes the embossed-projection welding of heavy-, intermediate-, and thin-gage sheet mild steel as well as the welds between dissimilar thickness joints. The article also considers the solid-projection welding of steels: annular, nut, and cross-wire projection configurations. It also details the various tests that can be used to validate projection weld quality.

Abstract
Conventional high-strength aluminum alloys produced via powder metallurgy (P/M) technologies, namely, rapid solidification (RS) and mechanical alloying (mechanical attrition) have high strength at room temperature and elevated temperature. This article focuses on the metallurgy and weldability of dispersion-strengthened aluminum alloys based on the aluminum-iron system that are produced using various RS-P/M processing techniques. It describes weldability issues related to weld solidification behavior, the formation of hydrogen-induced porosity in the weld zone, and the high-temperature deformation behavior of these alloys, which affect the selection and application of fusion and solid-state welding processes. The article provides specific examples of material responses to welding conditions and highlights the microstructural development in the weld zone.

Abstract
This article provides a review of metallographic procedures and techniques for analyzing the microstructure of fusion welded joints. It discusses sample preparation, the use of backing plates, and common sectioning methods. It identifies the various types of defects that can occur in arc welded metals, organizing them according to the sectioning method by which they are observed. Diffusion bonding can be achieved for materials with adherent surface oxides, but the resultant interface strengths of these materials are considerably less than that measured for the parent material. The article describes three stages of diffusion bonding: microasperity deformation, diffusion-controlled mass transport, and interface migration. Microjoining methods are commonly used to fabricate medical components and devices. This article describes key challenges involved during microjoining of medical device components. The primary mechanisms used in microjoining for medical device applications include microresistance spot welding (MRSW) and laser welding. Abstract
Diffusion bonding is only one of many solid-state joining processes wherein joining is accomplished without the need for a liquid interface (brazing) or the creation of a cast product via melting and resolidification. This article offers a qualitative summary of the theory of diffusion bonding. It discusses factors that affect the relative difficulty of diffusion bonding oxide-bearing surfaces. These include surface roughness prior to welding, mechanical properties of the oxide, relative hardness of the metal and its oxide film, and prestraining or work hardening of the material. The article describes the mechanism of diffusion bonding in terms of microasperity deformation, diffusion-controlled mass transport, and interface migration. It concludes with a discussion on diffusion bonding with interface aids.
