Damage tolerance is a philosophy used for maintaining the structural safety of commercial transport aircrafts. This article describes the structural evaluations necessary to comply with the regulations contained in the Federal Air worthiness Requirements 25.571 whose guidance is given in Advisory Circular 25.571-1A from the Federal Aviation Administration. It provides an overview of the historical evolution of damage tolerance philosophy and presents a discussion of the design philosophies and a summary of the evaluation tasks for damage tolerance certification.

This article focuses on failure analyses of aircraft components from a metallurgical and materials engineering standpoint, which considers the interdependence of processing, structure, properties, and performance of materials. It discusses methodologies for conducting aircraft investigations and inspections and emphasizes cases where metallurgical or materials contributions were causal to an accident event. The article highlights how the failure of a component or system can affect the associated systems and the overall aircraft. The case studies in this article provide examples of aircraft component and system-level failures that resulted from various factors, including operational stresses, environmental effects, improper maintenance/inspection/repair, construction and installation issues, manufacturing issues, and inadequate design.

This article reviews corrosion problems in the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and discusses management and maintenance aspects of the practices that address the cost and readiness. It describes the plans to institute corrosion prevention and control strategies under DoD directives in engineering design, material selection, and fabrication processes for new acquisitions. The article also suggests a long-term strategy to reduce the cost of corrosion control.

It discusses the factors influencing airplane corrosion from the manufacturing perspective: design, manufacturing, and service-related factors. This article presents the importance of progressing from post-manufacturing inspection/verification to in-process inspection/verification methods. It lists the various quality assurance factors considered for typical composite laminate lay-up process. The article provides information on composite cure tooling that is fabricated from steel, aluminum, or high-temperature composite materials. The quality assurance for commercial applications is reviewed. Fluid flow is important because it affects weld shape and is related to the formation of a variety of weld defects in gas tungsten arc (GTA) welds. This article describes the surface-tension-driven fluid flow model and its experimental observations. The effects of mass transport on arc plasma and weld pool are discussed. The article reviews the strategies for controlling poor and variable penetration and describes the formation of keyhole and fluid flow in electron beam and laser welds. It also explains the fluid flow in gas metal arc welding and submerged arc welding, presenting its transport equations.

High-velocity gas motion occurs in and around the arc during welding. This article describes the phenomena of gas flow in gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW). This article presents an overview of the use of mechanism analysis (kinematics and dynamics) and simulation. It provides indications of the directions in which mechanism simulation is growing and how it is integrated in the evolving computer aided design and computer aided engineering (CAD/CAE) fields. This article describes the characteristics of three types of gas bearings, such as aerostatic bearing, precision aerodynamic bearing (PAB), and compliant aerodynamic bearing (CAB). It discusses the applications for aerostatic bearings and advantages in lubricating a bearing with a compressible gas. The article also describes the different types of aerostatic bearings, such as annular thrust bearings and orifice-compensated journal bearings. It presents a discussion on load capacity and stiffness, friction and power loss, and stability and damping of the aerostatic bearings. The article provides a discussion on the types of PAB and CAB. The types include spiral groove annular thrust bearings, cylindrical journal bearings, three-sector journal bearings, tilting-pad journal bearings, and helical-grooved journal bearings. The types of CAB include foil bearings and pressurized-membrane bearings. The article concludes with a description of factors that influence materials selection for gas-lubricated bearings.

This article first describes the two methods used in the 1998 U.S. corrosion cost study. In the first method, the cost was determined by summing the costs for corrosion control methods and contract services. In the second, the cost of corrosion was first determined for specific industry sectors and then extrapolated to calculate a national total corrosion cost. This article lists the basic characteristics of aluminum and its alloys. It tabulates the aluminum extrusion alloys by series and lists the typical applications for 6xxx series aluminum extrusions. The article discusses three broad categories of extrusion profiles: solid profile, hollow profile, and semi hollow profile. It provides information on weldability and machinability, which are often considered in profile design and product performance. The article discusses different aluminum extrusion processes, such as the direct extrusion process and the indirect extrusion process. It schematically illustrates the plotting of flow stress and extrudability for several types of aluminum alloys. Abstract
This article provides non-proprietary and non-competition-sensitive information related to aircraft applications. It presents an overview of reliability and commonly used measurements. Failure modes that cause the negative performance are reviewed based on many types of sources. These include manufacturer service bulletins, reliability and customer service departments, literature reviews, demonstration programs, in-service evaluations, design guides, and surveys of commercial and military aircraft maintenance organizations. The article also describes lessons learned while attempting to avoid overlapping maintainability, reparability, and materials choice.

Abstract
Thermal spray is a generic term for a group of coating processes used to apply metallic, ceramic, cermet, and some polymeric coatings for a broad range of applications. This article provides a brief description of commercially important thermal spray processes, namely, powder-fed flame spray, wire- or rod-fed flame spray, electric arc spray, plasma arc spray, vacuum plasma spray, high-velocity oxyfuel spray, detonation gun deposition, and cold spray, and their advantages. It provides details on the microstructural characteristics of thermal spray coatings. The article also presents information on a wide variety of materials that can be thermal sprayed, such as metals, ceramics, intermetallics, composites, cermets, polymers, and functionally gradient materials. Tables are included, which list the thermal spray processes and coating properties of importance for various industrial applications.
