Abstract
This article suggests procedures to increase the availability and function of patterns and tooling. It discusses the common expected failure mechanisms, such as erosion and fatigue, for dies and patterns. A successful maintenance program requires good record keeping for each tool. The article lists information required for the maintenance tooling record and preventive maintenance (PM) items from the North American Die Casting Association's publication E501. It concludes with information on objectives for proper storage of tools and patterns. The objectives are preventing tool degradation, safe workplace, easy location, proximity, and cataloging and tracking.

Abstract
This article discusses the principles of physical metallurgy and metallography of depleted uranium. It describes the techniques involved in the preparation of thin foils for transmission electron microscopy and illustrates the resulting microstructure of uranium and uranium alloys, with the aid of black and white images. The article also provides information on the applications of etching and examination of uranium alloys, at both macro and micro scales, in characterizing the grain structures, segregation patterns, inclusions, and the metal flow geometries produced by solidification and mechanical working processes.

Abstract
Advanced thermoplastic composites possess impact resistance, fracture toughness, and elevated temperature endurance properties due to their melt-fusible nature. This article presents the material options available for thermoplastic composites such as pseudothermoplastics, post-impregnated thermoplastics, and true thermoplastics. It describes the processing methods of thermoplastic composites, including weaving, seaming, autoclaving, preconsolidation, roll consolidation, roll forming/pultruding, thermoforming, press forming, hydroforming, and diaphragm forming. The article provides information on different types of joints, namely, fastened, adhesive bonded, dual polymer bonded, co-consolidated, and welded joints. It explains the joining methods of thermoplastic composites, such as press forming, diaphragm forming, autoclaving, ultrasonic welding, resistance welding, and induction welding.

Abstract
The corrosion issues in the compressor, combustor and turbine sections of industrial gas turbines used in steam production generally depend on the quality of the fuel, air, and water used in the engine than on the specific industrial application. This article focuses on the forms of corrosion and their preventive measures in the compressor, combustor and turbine sections of a steam turbine. The compressor section mainly suffers from aqueous corrosion; while in case of the combustor and turbine sections, which are made of nickel-base superalloys, high-temperature environmental attack in the form of high-temperature oxidation and hot corrosion are predominant. The effect of high-temperature oxidation and hot corrosion on the mechanical properties of superalloys is also discussed.

Abstract
This article presents the Schmid's law that describes the response of crystal structures to loading. It describes the Taylor model to calculate the uniaxial yield stress of an isotropic face-centered cubic aggregate in terms of critical resolved shear stress. The article discusses the stress-based approach of the Bishop and Hill procedure to directly find stress states that could simultaneously operate at least five independent slip systems. It presents ways to find isostress or lower-bound yield loci for sheets having single-crystal orientation.

Abstract
This article introduces the fundamental concepts of chemical thermodynamics and chemical kinetics in describing presolidification phenomena. For metallurgical systems, the most important thermodynamic variables are enthalpy and Gibbs free energy. A qualitative demonstration of the interrelationship between phase diagrams and thermodynamics is presented. The article discusses processes that generally limit the rates of chemical processes. These include nucleation of the product phase and interphase mass transport. The article provides a discussion on the dissolution of alloy with melting point lower than bath temperature and dissolution of alloy that is solid at bath temperatures.

The purpose of fractography is to analyze fracture features and attempt to relate the topography of the fracture surface to the causes and/or basic mechanisms of fracture. This article reviews the historical development of fractography, from the early studies of fracture appearance dating back to the sixteenth century to the state-of-the-art work in electron fractography and quantitative fractography. It also describes the applications and limitations of scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope.

Abstract
Casting is one of the most economical and efficient methods for producing metal parts. In terms of scale, it is well suited for everything from low-volume, prototype production runs to filling global orders for millions of parts. Casting also affords great flexibility in terms of design, readily accommodating a wide range of shapes, dimensional requirements, and configuration complexities. This article traces the history of metal casting from its beginnings to the current state, creating a timeline marked by discoveries, advancements, and influential events. It also lists some of the major markets where castings are used.
