Abstract
Quenching is one of the most important heat treating processes, because it is so closely related to dimensional control requirements and control of residual stresses. This article provides an overview of the fundamental material- and process-related parameters of quenching on residual stress, distortion control, and cracking. This overview is followed by various selected case histories of failures attributed to the quenching process.

Abstract
Malleable iron is a type of cast iron that has most of its carbon in the form of irregularly shaped graphite nodules instead of flakes, as in gray iron, or small graphite spherulites, as in ductile iron. This article discusses the production of malleable iron based on the metallurgical criteria: to produce solidified white iron throughout the section thickness; and to produce the desired graphite distribution (nodule count) upon annealing. It describes the induction heating and quenching or flame heating and quenching for surface hardening of fully pearlitic malleable iron. Laser and electron beam techniques also have been used for hardening selected areas on the surface of pearlitic and ferritic malleable iron castings that are free from decarburization.

Abstract
The high-alloyed white irons are primarily used for abrasion-resistant applications and are readily cast into the parts needed in machinery for crushing, grinding, and handling of abrasive materials. This article discusses three major groups of the high-alloy white cast irons: nickel-chromium white irons, chromium-molybdenum irons, and high-chromium white irons. Mechanical properties for three white irons representing each of these three general groups are presented as bar graphs. The article also describes the various heat treatments of a martensitic microstructure, including austenitization, quenching, tempering, annealing, and stress relieving.

Abstract
Ductile cast irons are heat treated primarily to create matrix microstructures and associated mechanical properties not readily obtained in the as-cast condition. This article discusses the most important heat treatments of ductile irons and their purposes. International standards of ductile iron provided by ASTM International, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and SAE International are presented in a table. The article explains basic structural differences between the ferritic, pearlitic, martensitic, and ausferritic classes. It presents recommended practices for annealing ductile iron castings for different alloy contents and for castings with and without eutectic carbides. The article discusses the induction surface hardening and remelt hardening of ductile iron. It concludes with information on the effect of heat treatment on fatigue strength of ductile iron.

Abstract
Heat treatment simulation helps to predict heat treatment results such as component microstructures, properties, residual stresses, and distortion, and thereby assists in reducing experimental effort in defining heat treatment parameters. This article discusses the modeling and simulation of age hardening as being the most important heat treatment to strengthen aluminum alloys. It provides information on the heat treatment simulation model, the yield strength model based on the responsible strengthening mechanisms, and the flow curve model based on mechanical tests. The article also discusses simulation of the quenching process, and provides examples for aluminum quenching simulation.

Abstract
This article describes the integration of thermodynamic modeling, mobility database, and phase-transformation crystallography into phase-field modeling and its combination with transformation texture modeling to predict phase equilibrium, phase transformation, microstructure evolution, and transformation texture development during heat treatment of multicomponent alpha/beta and beta titanium alloys. It includes quantitative description of Burgers orientation relationship and path, discussion of lattice correspondence between the alpha and beta phases, and determination of the total number of Burgers correspondence variants and orientation variants. The article also includes calculation of the transformation strain with contributions from defect structures developed at alpha/beta interfaces as a precipitates grow in size. In the CALculation of PHAse Diagram (CALPHAD) framework, the Gibbs free energies and atomic mobilities are established as functions of temperature, pressure, and composition and serve directly as key inputs of any microstructure modeling. The article presents examples of the integrated computation tool set in simulating microstructural evolution.
