This article provides an overview of the first three applications. It describes the machines, tools, techniques, and cutting fluids used for deep-hole trepanning. Abstract
Reaming is a machining operation in which a rotary tool takes a light cut to improve the accuracy of the round hole and reduce the roughness of the hole surface. This article describes its process capabilities and provides information on workpiece material and hardness, as well as the machines used. Reamer materials and design, speed and feed, bushings and fixtures, and cutting fluids used are also discussed. The article outlines the factors to be considered while selecting a reamer. It also discusses the applications of the principle types of reamers, namely, straight-flute chucking, spiral-flute chucking, adjustable, end-cutting, shell, floating-blade, gun, and special-purpose reamers, with examples.

Abstract
Boring is a machining process in which internal diameters are generated in true relation to the centerline of the spindle by means of single-point cutting tools. This article provides a discussion on boring machines and boring tools and presents a comprehensive discussion on the various elements of boring. The elements are composition and hardness of workpiece metal, cutting fluid, speeds and feeds, and methods for piloting and supporting tools in boring applications. The article explains the role of workpiece size in selecting the equipment and processing procedure and the use of techniques to overcome difficulties presented by workpiece configuration. It describes the factors related to accuracy of boring and factors affecting them. The article also presents a discussion on close-tolerance boring and methods of controlling vibration and chatter. It concludes with a section presenting information on the use of boring equipment for machining operations other than boring.

Scanners are the most versatile and flexible of the equipment available to the heat treating industry for induction hardening. This article provides a general overview of scanners, and describes various critical factors, including scan speeds, rotational speeds, and center total indicator runout of vertical scanners. It presents information on the frequency selection parameters for scanning applications. The article also discusses the critical parameters and production rates in specifying and developing a tooth-by-tooth hardening process.

Abstract
This article illustrates the characteristics of pierced holes and summarizes the hole wall quality. Specific guidance in selecting die clearances is provided by considering the types of edges produced with different clearances. The article discusses the effect of tool dulling and the use of small and large clearance. It informs that the force needed to pierce a given material depends on the shear strength of the work metal, the peripheral size of the hole or holes to be pierced, stock thickness, and depth of shear on the punch. The article discusses the presses and tools used in piercing. It illustrates the use of compound dies, progressive dies, and transfer dies; piercing of thick and thin stock and piercing holes at an angle to the surface; special piercing techniques; and shaving of low-carbon steels.

A sliding bearing (plain bearing) is a machine element designed to transmit loads or reaction forces to a shaft that rotates relative to the bearing. This article discusses the properties of bearing materials. It provides information on bearing material systems: single-metal systems, bimetal systems, and trimetal systems. The article describes the designations, nominal compositions, mechanical properties, and applications of various sliding bearing alloys: tin-base alloys, lead-base alloys, copper-base alloys, aluminum-base alloys, silver-base alloys, zinc-base alloys, additional metallic materials, nonmetallic materials. This article discusses the presses, auxiliary equipment, and dies used in the blanking and piercing of commonly used magnetically soft materials, namely, low-carbon electrical steels and oriented and nonoriented silicon electrical steels. It describes the effect of stock thickness and work metal composition and condition on blanking and piercing. The article provides an overview of the influence of burr height on stacking factors and presents a discussion on the lubrication and core plating of electrical steels that ease the process.

Countersinking, counterboring, and spotfacing operations can be carried out on drilling machines and usually follow drilling operations. This article discusses five common types of countersinking tools or countersinks, namely, machine, three-flute, single-flute, insert-type, and interchangeable countersinks. It provides a short description of the two types of spotfacing tools: back and double-end spotfacers and automatic back spotfacers. The article describes different types of counterboring tools, including interchangeable-pilot, integral-pilot, and interchangeable-cutter counterbores. It tabulates the nominal speeds and feeds for counterboring and spotfacing of carbon and low-alloy steels with high-speed steel and carbide tools.

Shaped tube electrolytic machining (STEM) is a modified electrochemical machining (ECM) process that uses an acid electrolyte so that the removed metal goes into the solution instead of forming a precipitate. This article lists some specific machining applications of the STEM process, including turbine blade cooling holes, turbine vane cooling holes, turbine disk cooling passages, oil passages, and fuel nozzles. It describes the limitations and advantages of the STEM process. This article focuses on machines that are designed, constructed, and used for drilling. It provides information on the design, materials, selection, and classification of drill. The article describes drills that are specially designed for hard steel and other specific applications. A variety of drill point styles, such as single-angle points and reduced-rake points, are described. The article discusses the factors considered to obtain expected dimensional accuracy of holes. Abstract
Copper and copper alloys constitute one of the major groups of commercial metals due to their excellent electrical and thermal conductivities, corrosion and fatigue resistance, ease of fabrication, and good strength. This article lists the types, properties, fabrication characteristics, corrosion ratings, temper designations, and applications of wrought copper and copper alloys. It also presents an outline of the most commonly used mechanical working and heat treating processes. The copper industry in the United States is broadly composed of two segments: producers (mining, smelting, and refining companies) and fabricators (wire mills, brass mills, foundries, and powder plants). The article discusses copper production methods and describes major changes in the structure of the U.S. copper and copper alloys industry.
