Abstract
Flash welding (FW) is a resistance welding process in which a butt joint weld is produced by a flashing action and by the application of pressure. Flash welding is used to join metallic parts that have similar cross sections in terms of size and shape. This article discusses flash-welding applications, including chain links, transmission bands, automotive flywheel ring gears, aircraft landing gear, band-saw blades, and crankshaft counter weights. It describes the components of a typical flash-welding machine. The article provides information on the electrical controls of flash-welding equipment. These include programmable controllers, welding current controllers, and either motor or servo-valve controllers.

Abstract
This article presents a brief discussion on the main applications for low- and high-viscosity polyalphaolefins (PAOs) and highlights key areas of interest and shows why PAOs are used in these applications. It discusses the physical properties of passenger car motor oils (PCMOs) based on or containing PAOs. The properties include Noack volatility and pour point. The article also discusses the properties and applications of heavy-duty engine oil (HDEO), industrial lubricants, food-grade lubricants, greases, transportation gear oils, compressor oils, hydraulic fluids, and transmission fluids.

Abstract
Pack carburizing is a process in which carbon monoxide derived from a solid compound decomposes at the metal surface into nascent carbon and carbon dioxide. In addition to discussing the pros and cons of pack carburizing, this article provides information on the carburizing medium, compounds, furnaces, and containers used in pack carburizing. The successful operation of the pack carburizing process depends on the control of principal variables such as carbon potential, temperature, time, case depth, and steel composition. The three types of furnaces most commonly used for pack carburizing are the box, car-bottom, and pit types. Carburizing containers are made of carbon steel, aluminum-coated carbon steel, or iron-nickel-chromium heat-resisting alloys. The article also provides information on the packing procedure of workpieces.

It provides indications of the directions in which mechanism simulation is growing and how it is integrated in the evolving computer aided design and computer aided engineering (CAD/CAE) fields. Mechanism simulation is best used as part of a concurrent CAD/CAE approach to design. This article is an atlas of fractographs that helps in understanding the causes and mechanisms of fracture of precipitation-hardening stainless steels and in identifying and interpreting the morphology of fracture surfaces. The fractographs illustrate the cup-and-cone tension-overload fracture, low-cycle and high-cycle fatigue fracture, fracture surface, brittle intergranular fracture, hydrogen embrittlement, and intergranular stress-corrosion cracking of stainless steel components of these steels. Abstract
Shell molding is used for making production quantities of castings that range in weight from a few ounces to approximately 180 kg (400 lb), in both ferrous and nonferrous metals. This article lists the limitations or disadvantages of shell mold casting. It describes the two methods for preparation of resin-sand mixture for shell molding, namely, mixing resin and sand according to conventional dry mixing techniques, and coating the sand with resin. Shaping of shell molds and cores from resin sand mixtures is accomplished in machines. The article discusses the major steps in producing a mold or core and describes the problems most frequently encountered in shell-mold casting. The problems include mold cracking, soft molds, low hot tensile strength of molds, peelback, and mold shift. The article concludes with information on examples that provide some relative cost comparisons between shell molding and green sand molding.

Abstract
Press quenching is a specialized quenching technique that can be utilized during heat treatment to minimize distortion of complex geometrical components by using specialized tooling for generating concentrated forces that constrain the movement of the component in a carefully controlled manner. This article provides a detailed account of the fundamental components of quenching machines, including the upright machine section, control panel, lower die table, tooling, and the base. Shaping and slotting are used to remove metal from surfaces through the use of a single-point tool supported by a ram that reciprocates the tool in a linear motion against the workpiece. This article discusses the process capabilities of shaping and slotting with respect to the size and configuration of the workpiece. Shaping and slotting machines develop cutting action from a straight-line reciprocating motion between the tool and the workpiece. The article describes the types of shapers such as horizontal shaper and vertical shaper. It briefly discusses the applications of high-speed steel tools and carbide tools for shaping.
