Abstract
Zinc and zinc alloys require surface engineering prior to coating or use to improve adhesion and corrosion resistance. Die-cast zinc parts, in addition, must be trimmed and finished to remove flash and parting lines. This article covers zinc cleaning procedures as well as coating and finishing processes. It explains how to remove parting lines and presents several mechanical finishing methods, including surface polishing, brushing, controlled shot peening, and buffing. It also provides information on solvent cleaning, emulsion cleaning, aqueous detergent or alkaline cleaning), electrocleaning, acid dipping, and zinc conversion coating treatments.

Abstract
Thermal spray coatings, along with certain proprietary sealants, are widely used in the paper manufacturing industry for corrosion and wear resistance and to impart special surface characteristics. This article discusses the steps involved in the paper manufacturing process. Most modern papermaking machines are based on variations of the Fourdrinier machine. The article describes four operational sections of the machine: forming, press, drying, and calendar. It provides an overview of the machine components where thermal spray coatings are used, namely, digesters, blow tanks, suction roll, center press rolls, yankee dryer rolls, calendar rolls, doctor/scalping blades, and cutting equipment.

Abstract
The designer of die casting tooling must balance the functional requirements of the part being cast with the cost, speed, and quality requirements of the process. In addition, attention must also be paid to the capacity and operating parameters of the casting machines being used and the need and economics of postprocessing. This article examines how design and materials selection address these diverse requirements of conventional die casting tooling. It focuses on the tooling for high-volume processes where the liquid or semisolid metal is forced into the die with high pressure and speed. The article also describes the functions of the tooling which involves supplying of molten alloy to the casting machine and injecting it into the die.

Abstract
High-pressure die casting is a fast method for the net shape manufacturing of parts from nonferrous alloys. This article reviews the automation technologies for the different stages or steps of the process. These steps include liquid metal pouring, injection, solidification, die open, part extraction, die lubrication, insert loading, and die close. Some manual aspects of the operations, together with automation options, are discussed. The article describes finishing steps, such as finish trimming, detailed deflashing, shot blast cleaning, and quality checks. Automation of the postcasting process is also discussed.

Abstract
Thermoelastic stress analysis (TSA) an increasingly popular infrared (IR)-based technique for measuring stress on the surface of a part subjected to time-varying loads. This article begins by providing a theoretical and historical background of thermoelastic stress analysis. It then describes infrared detectors, such as quantum detectors and thermal/nonquantum detectors, for thermoelastic stress analysis. The article discusses the theoretical aspects for producing thermoelastic stress analysis data and the applications amenable to thermoelastic stress analysis. It concludes with information on the qualitative applications of thermoelastic stress analysis.

Abstract
Materials of construction for equipment and piping in pharmaceutical processing plants must be resistant to corrosion from the high-purity water, the buffer solutions used in preparation of the products, and the cleaning solutions used to maintain the purity of the product. The primary water used in pharmaceutical production is water for injection (WFI). This article presents the steps for preparing WFI and discusses the effect of chlorides on stainless steel. It provides information on the passive layer of stainless steels and chromium-containing nickel alloys. The article provides information on the surface finish of pharmaceutical equipment. It discusses the classification of rouge and the characteristics of cast type 316L stainless steel. The article also explains how and when to perform cleaning and repassivation process on classes of rouge.

Abstract
The objective of dimensional management is to create a design and process that absorbs as much variation as possible without affecting the function of the product. This article describes the steps followed by the dimensional management process. These include defining product dimensional requirements, determining process and product requirements, ensuring accurate documentation, developing a measurement plan that validates product requirements, establishing manufacturing capabilities versus design intent, and establishing production-to-design feedback loop. Abstract
Selective plating, also known as brush plating, differs from traditional tank or bath plating in that the workpiece is not immersed in a plating solution (electrolyte). Instead, the electrolyte is brought to the part and applied by a handheld anode or stylus, which incorporates an absorbent wrapping for applying the solution to the workpiece (cathode). This article focuses on the selective plating systems that include a power pack, plating tools, anode covers, specially formulated plating solutions, and any auxiliary equipment required for the particular application. It provides a detailed account of the applications of selective plating, with examples. The article describes the advantages, limitations, key process elements, and health and safety considerations of selective plating. It also includes the most important industrial, government, and military specifications.

Abstract
Powder metallurgy (PM) stainless steels, as with conventional PM steels, are often used in the as-sintered condition. In addition to cost considerations, minimization of postsinter handling and secondary operations is also preferred because it reduces the potential for contamination of the parts with particulates and residues, which can result in the appearance of surface rust. This article provides information on various secondary operations, including tumbling, re-pressing, resin impregnation, annealing or heat treating, brazing, machining, and welding. It describes those aspects relating to welding of PM stainless steels, specifically, the effects of density, residual porosity, and sintered chemistry on weldability. Further, the article investigates the influence the sintering atmosphere has on machinability, as well as differences created by the presence of residual porosity.

Abstract
Magnetic flux controllers are materials other than the copper coil that are used in induction systems to alter the flow of the magnetic field. This article describes the effects of magnetic flux controllers on common coil styles, namely, outer diameter coils, inner diameter coils, and linear coils. It provides information on the role of magnetic flux controllers for whole-body and local area mass-heating applications, continuous induction tube welding, seam-annealing inductors, and various induction melting systems, namely, channel-type, crucible-type, and cold crucible systems. The article also describes the benefits of the flux controllers for induction heat treating processes such as single-shot and scanning.

Abstract
Complete vehicle accelerated corrosion testing on the proving ground is a mandatory testing tool among vehicle manufacturers around the globe. This article focuses on creating some awareness of the difficulty in applying reliable corrosion tests for all corrosion-sensitive automotive systems at once. It describes the various factors for a complete vehicle testing, including wear from road grit, dirt, salt load, elevated temperatures, and mechanical effects such as chafing and fretting. The article discusses the four main test blocks, namely, driving sequence on various proving ground tracks, exposure of the vehicle in one or more ways to road deicing salts, static exposure to forced climatic conditions, and additional elements such as operating the mechanical systems of the vehicle, car washes, and so forth. It concludes with information on the major advantages and drawbacks of a full-service-life test.

Abstract
This article discusses the factors to be considered in selecting and evaluating machining tests for the purpose of evaluating cutting tool performance and workpiece machinability. It provides a brief description of cutting tool materials, such as high-speed steels, uncoated and coated carbides, cermets, ceramics, cubic boron nitride, and polycrystalline diamond. The article considers the matrices that represent the range of tests performed on candidate cutting tool materials: the workpiece matrix, the property matrix, and the operation matrix. Various machine tests used to evaluate cutting tools, including the impact test, turning test, and facing test, are described. The article lists the factors to be taken into consideration in measuring the machinability of a material. The article presents general recommendations for proper chip groove selection on carbide tools and concludes with information on machining economics.

Abstract
Surface treatments are applied to magnesium parts primarily to improve their appearance and corrosion resistance. Mechanical and chemical cleaning methods are used singly or in combination, depending on the specific application and product involved to ensure repetitive reliability. This article focuses on mechanical finishing methods, namely, barrel tumbling, polishing, buffing, vibratory finishing, fiber brushing, and shot blasting. It provides useful information on process control and difficulties with chemical and anodic treatments of magnesium alloys. The use and applications of plating and organic finishing of magnesium alloys are also reviewed. The article concludes with a description of health and safety precautions to be followed during the surface treatment process.

Abstract
Brittle materials, such as ceramics, intermetallics, and graphites, are increasingly being used in the fabrication of lightweight components. This article focuses on the design methodologies and characterization of certain material properties. It describes the fundamental concepts and models associated with performing time-independent and time-dependent reliability analyses for brittle materials exhibiting scatter in ultimate strength. The article discusses the two-parameter and three-parameter Weibull distribution for representing the underlying probability density function for tensile strength. It reviews life prediction reliability models used for predicting the life of a component with complex geometry and loading. The article outlines reliability algorithms and presents several applications to illustrate the utilization of these reliability algorithms in structural applications.
