Abstract
As additive manufacturing (AM) gains maturity as a manufacturing technique for production in many industrial sectors, inspection as a tool for quality control gains importance. This article is focused on the field of dimensional metrology, which is typically concerned with the verification of size, location, form, and surface topography of geometric features. This is split into two categories: geometric (size, location, form) and surface measurement (topography). The article also focuses on applicable inspection technologies, and it discusses the context within digital thread manufacturing. A case study on the Digital Inspection Requirements Enhancing Coverage and Traceability (DIRECT) is also presented.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) creates parts layer by layer directly from three-dimensional computer-aided design data. This article discusses systematic ways to address the challenges in AM data integration by exploring various AM-specific data-integration scenarios that can improve the current AM ecosystem. Representative AM data sources are also described. A reference framework that captures the heterogenous AM data sources and existing data-integration mechanisms are used. General data-integration practices—based on existing manufacturing data and lab information system integration experiences—are recommended to automate AM data flow, operations, and development. Lastly, the article discusses the seven steps in the big-data-integration workflow.

Abstract
This article provides an overview of the relationships between torque, angle-of-turn, tension, and friction and explains how they are measured and evaluated. It focuses on the principle, test equipment, procedure, evaluation, and test report of various testing methods, namely, friction coefficient testing, torque tension testing, locknut testing, and angular ductility and rotational capacity tests. The article reviews the basic methods and fundamental principles for mechanical testing of externally and internally threaded fasteners and bolted joints. The test methods for externally threaded fasteners include product hardness, proof load, axial and wedge tension testing of full-sized products, tension testing of machined test specimens, and total extension at fracture testing. Product hardness, proof load, and cone proof-load test are the test methods for internally threaded fasteners. The article concludes with a description of torque-angle signature analysis and the specification of measurement accuracy for torque and clamp force.

Abstract
This article describes the unique aspects of cold isostatic pressing (CIP) in comparison with die compaction, for powder metallurgy parts. It details the components of CIP equipment, including pressure vessels, pressure generators, and tooling material. The article reviews the part shapes and their influence in determining tap density of the filled mold. It provides a discussion on process parameters, such as dwell time, depressurization rate, evaluation of green strength and density, and thermal processing, and illustrates a process flowchart for the production of CIP parts.

Surface damage from sliding contact is related to the adhesion of mating surfaces in contact. This article describes the methods for evaluation of surface damage caused by sliding contact. It defines adhesive wear in terms of asperity, cold welding, galling, scuffing, seizure, and wear coefficient. The article discusses various galling testing methods, such as button-on-block galling test, pin-on-flat galling test, and threaded connection galling test. It provides an overview of fretting wear that occurs between two tight-fitting surfaces subjected to a cyclic, relative motion of extremely small amplitude. It presents two principal types of optical microscopes that are appropriate for visual examination of fractured parts: the stereomicroscope and the single-light-path digital microscope. Nondestructive inspection (NDI) methods for cast iron are used to ensure that the parts supplied perform as required by the purchaser. This article focuses on the principal nondestructive methods used to inspect for anomalies in cast irons and to determine if the volume, shape, size, or number of these anomalies exceeds the maximum allowed by the purchaser. The nondestructive methods include visual inspection, dimensional inspection, liquid penetrant inspection, magnetic-particle inspection, eddy-current inspection, radiographic inspection, ultrasonic inspection, resonant testing, and leak testing. The technique, strengths, and weaknesses of each of the nondestructive methods are also discussed.

Abstract
This article describes the phenomena of crack initiation and early growth. It examines specimen design and preparation as well as the apparatus used in crack initiation testing. The article provides descriptions of the various commercially available fatigue testing machines: axial fatigue testing machines and bending fatigue machines. Load cells, grips and alignment devices, extensometry and strain measuring devices, environmental chambers, graphic recorders, furnaces, and heating systems of ancillary equipment are discussed. The article presents technologies available to accomplish closed loop control of materials testing systems in performing standard materials tests and for the development of custom testing applications. It explores the advanced software tools for materials testing. The article includes a description of baseline isothermal fatigue testing, creep-fatigue interaction, and thermomechanical fatigue. The effects of various variables on fatigue resistance and guidelines for fatigue testing are also presented.

The article provides an overview of the various types of testing machines: gear-driven or screw-driven machines and servohydraulic machines. It examines force application systems, force measurement, and strain measurement. The article discusses important instrument considerations and describes gripping techniques of test specimens. It analyzes test diagnostics and reviews the use of computers for gathering and reducing data. Emphasis is placed on universal testing machines with separate discussions of equipment factors for tensile testing and compressing testing. The influence of the machine stiffness on the test results is also described, along with a general assessment of test accuracy, precision, and repeatability of modern equipment.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing, as the first fully digital manufacturing process, is critically dependent on data, including the input materials, the process parameters guiding the three-dimensional printing process execution, any postprocessing steps, and any inspections performed on the printed coupons and/or parts, to name just a few examples. This article presents the standards to enable findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) data. It then discusses three main types of data models that are used to capture different levels of detail and granularity of data: conceptual, logical, and physical. Different approaches and techniques with their own strengths and weaknesses are developed to model data. Four of the major types of data models include hierarchical, relational, object-oriented, and network/graph-based. The article also presents the evolution of data management approaches. It then describes the characteristics of effective logical data models.

Abstract
Fracture surfaces can provide an important and indispensable record of many factors in simple or complex failures. Visual examination of fracture surfaces can reveal the type and direction of loading, with fracture-surface features often providing definitive evidence of torsion, tension, bending, and compressive loads. This article discusses tools and techniques of visual examination and characteristic features of fracture features. A brief review of ductile and brittle fracture-surface features is provided. The article also describes macroscopic features that can be used to identify fracture-initiation sites, locations of final overload, and the directions of crack propagation. In addition, the use of these features to characterize loading at the time of failure is also described.

Turning is a machining process for generating external surfaces of revolution by the action of a cutting tool on a rotating workpiece, usually in a lathe. This article discusses the process capabilities of turning over other machining operations and describes the classification, controlling methods, attachments, and accessories of a lathe machine. It reviews the design and various operations of single-point cutting tools in turning. In addition, the article discusses the influence of various factors on selection of equipment and machining procedure for a specific part. These include the size and configuration of the workpiece, equipment capacity, production quantity, dimensional accuracy, number of operations, and the surface finish. It presents examples that describe or compare equipment and techniques for production applications. This article provides detailed information on the instrumentation and principles of the scanning electron microscope (SEM). It begins with a description of the primary components of a conventional SEM instrument. This is followed by a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of the SEM compared with other common microscopy and microanalysis techniques. The following sections cover the critical issues regarding sample preparation, the physical principles regarding electron beam-sample interaction, and the mechanisms for many types of image contrast. The article also presents the details of SEM-based techniques and specialized SEM instruments. It ends with example applications of various SEM modes.
