Abstract
This article describes the features, benefits and limitations of petrolatum and microcrystalline wax. It provides a detailed discussion on the steps to be followed before applying the various forms of the wax-based coatings. The wax-based coating forms include petrolatum and microcrystalline tapes, marine petrolatum-based pile systems; cold-applied petrolatum-based paste coating systems; hot-applied microcrystalline wax flood coating systems; wax-based dips, brushons, and sprays; and wax-impregnated fabrics and wax-coated papers. The article also discusses the applications and limitations of these wax-based coatings. It concludes by highlighting the steps involved in the installation of wax-based casing fillers.

Thermal spray coatings, along with certain proprietary sealants, are widely used in the paper manufacturing industry for corrosion and wear resistance and to impart special surface characteristics. This article discusses the steps involved in the paper manufacturing process. Most modern papermaking machines are based on variations of the Fourdrinier machine. The article describes four operational sections of the machine: forming, press, drying, and calendar. It provides an overview of the machine components where thermal spray coatings are used, namely, digesters, blow tanks, suction roll, center press rolls, yankee dryer rolls, calendar rolls, doctor/scalping blades, and cutting equipment.

This article provides information on the chemistries of FBE, and discusses the application procedures for internal and external FBE pipe coating. The procedures involve pipe inspection, surface preparation, heating, powder application, curing, cooling, coating inspection, and repairing. It describes the problems and solutions for FBE external pipe coatings, girth weld FBE application, FBE custom coatings, internal FBE pipe linings, and FBE rebar coatings.

Metallographic examination is a critical step in the assessment of thermal spray coating characteristics. This article discusses the major steps involved in metallographic examination: sectioning, mounting, grinding, polishing, optical microscopy, and image analysis. It provides a discussion on etching to reveal grain structure. The article also provides recommendations for metallographic examination of some standard coatings.

Abstract
Thermal inspection comprises all methods in which heat-sensing devices or substances are used to detect irregular temperatures. Inspection of workpieces can be used to detect flaws and undesirable distribution of heat during service. Though there are several methods of thermal inspection and many types of temperature-measuring devices and substances, this article focuses only on thermography, which is the mapping of isotherms, or contours of equal temperature, over a test surface, and on thermometry, which is the measurement of temperature. Thermography techniques can be classified as contact thermographic methods using cholesteric liquid crystals, thermally quenched phosphors, and heat-sensitive paints, and noncontact techniques using hand-held infrared scanners, high-resolution infrared imaging systems, and thermal wave interferometer systems. Contact thermometric inspection devices include bolometers, thermocouples, thermopiles, and meltable substances, whereas radiometers and pyrometers come under the noncontact category.

Abstract
The use of zinc in corrosion-protective coatings is due to its higher galvanic activity relative to that of steel. Pure zinc dust provides the best sacrificial protection to steel in a galvanic couple. Zinc-rich coatings can be subcategorized according to the type of binder material used, namely, inorganic and organic zinc-rich coatings. Common inorganic binders such as post-cured water-based alkali metal silicates, self-cured water-based alkali metal silicates, and self-cured solvent-based alkyl silicates, are reviewed. The article also compares inorganic and organic zinc-rich coatings, and discusses the concerns regarding zinc-rich coatings.

Abstract
This article illustrates how objective experiments and comparisons can be used to develop surface preparation procedures for metallographic examination of structural features of metals. These procedures are classified as machining, grinding and abrasion, or polishing. The article describes the abrasion artifacts in austenitic steels, zinc, ferritic steels, and pearlitic steels, and other effects of abrasion damages, including flatness of abraded surfaces and embedding of abrasive. Different polishing damages, such as degradation of etching contrast and scratch traces, are reviewed. The article explains the final-polishing processes such as skid polishing, vibratory polishing methods, etch-attack and electromechanical polishing, and polishing with special abrasives. An overview of special polishing techniques for unusual materials such as very hard and very soft materials is provided. The article concludes with a discussion on semiautomatic preparation procedures, providing information on procedures based on the use of diamond abrasives charged in a carrier paste and in a suspension.

Abstract
Shearing is a process of cutting flat product with blades, rotary cutters, or with the aid of a blanking or punching die. This article commences with a description of some wear and material factors for tools used to shear flat product, principally sheet. Methods of wear control are reviewed in terms of tool materials, coatings and surface treatments, and lubrication. The article discusses tool steels that are used for cold and hot shearing, and rotary slitting. It provides information on the materials used for two main categories of machine knives: circular knives and straight knife cutters. The article also discusses the selection of materials for blanking and piercing dies and provides examples that illustrate the various types of tooling changes for blanking high-carbon steel.
