Abstract
Quantitative fractography (QF) is the examination and characterization of fracture surfaces of failed or broken-open components and specimens. This article provides examples of the application of QF to evaluate real-life fatigue failures and also a comprehensive guideline chart for detecting and measuring fatigue striations and progression markings, with examples.

Abstract
This article discusses several examples of fatigue load histories that intentionally create artificial fracture-surface markings during testing such that they are measurable by post-test quantitative fractography (QF). It reviews a number of methods for providing fatigue fracture-surface markers to aid QF of fatigue crack growth (FCG). These methods are based on load changes, including reordering the basic load histories and/or adding loads to them. The article also provides some guidelines for obtaining recognizable FCG markers for a variety of load histories and crack-growth regimes for coupons, components, and, particularly, full-scale fatigue tests.

This article provides a detailed account of the fundamentals of protecting carbon-carbon composites and explains the various coating deposition techniques, namely, pack cementation, chemical vapor deposition, and slurry coatings. It includes information on the practical limitations of coatings for the carbon-carbon composites.

Abstract
Semisolid casting is a near-net shape manufacturing process capable of producing thick- and thin-walled complex-shaped components having excellent mechanical and functional performance. This article begins with a discussion on the history of semisolid processing and the advantages claimed for semisolid casting. It describes the four notable processes used to produce semisolid castings: thixocasting, rheocasting, thixomolding, and wrought processes. Most commercial aluminum semisolid casters use either thixocasting or rheocasting. The article discusses the die design, process conditions, and simulation for semisolid casting. It concludes with a review of several components produced by each of the various semisolid casting processes.

This article describes the influences of the operational environments of U.S. Navy aircraft during corrosion-control process. The most widely used materials in airframe structures and components, such as aluminum, steel, titanium, and magnesium alloy systems, are reviewed. The article provides information on the inspections steps, corrosion-control issues, and corrosion-prevention strategies for naval aircraft. Abstract
This article provides information on life assessment strategies and conceptually illustrates the interplay of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and fracture mechanics in the damage tolerant approach. It presents information on probability of detection (POD) and probability of false alarm (PFA). The article describes the damage tolerance approach to life management of cyclic-limited engine components and lists the commonly used nondestructive evaluation methods. It concludes with an illustration on the role of NDE, as quantified by POD, in fully probabilistic life management.

Abstract
Both nondestructive testing (NDT) and nondestructive evaluation (NDE) use noninvasive measurement techniques to gain information about defects and various properties of materials, components, and structures. This article begins with a discussion on the historical development of quantitative measurement techniques, evaluation reliability, and quantitative interpretation of nondestructive inspection methods. The common nondestructive evaluation methods, along with their uses and limitations, are summarized in a table. The article conceptually illustrates the interplay of NDE and fracture mechanics in the damage tolerant approach. It concludes with information on pressure vessel applications that can be separated into three protocols used by military nuclear power, commercial nuclear power, and non-nuclear pressure vessels and/or fired boilers.

This article discusses the properties and applications of two types of polyimide resins: condensation polyimides and addition-type polyimides. It describes the chemistry of condensation-type polyimides during synthesis, processing of polyamide acid precursor solution to polyimide, and preparation of polyimide films from thermoplastic polyamic acid precursors. The article reviews the chemistry of several addition-type polyimides, including phenylethynyl-containing imide oligomers, nadic end-capped polyimides, and LARC RP46. Abstract
This article describes the protective coatings technology used in naval aircrafts. It reviews the future needs and trends of the protective coatings technology based on advancing technology, environmental concerns, and operational requirements. The article discusses the standard finishing systems for aircrafts: the surface pretreatment system, primer, topcoat, advanced-performance topcoat, self-priming topcoat, and specialty coatings. It presents safe compliant solutions to environmental problems associated with the protective coatings technology. These solutions include the use of environmental regulations and hazardous materials, nonchromated pretreatments, waterborne technology, high-solids technology, and touch-up paints. The article also deals with the use of electrodeposition coatings, powder coatings, adhesive films, paint application equipment, and non-chromated sealants in the protective coatings technology.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) has gained increased significance and has been adopted across many industries for various applications. Specific net-shape AM fabrication methods, such as laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF), have matured significantly, leading to aerospace sector R&D focused on the feasibility of using flagship alloys to manufacture complex components. This article presents one example of an aluminum alloy design tailored for laser powder-bed fusion AM. It discusses the integrated computational materials engineering design approach.
