Abstract
This article describes the phenomena of crack initiation and early growth. It examines specimen design and preparation as well as the apparatus used in crack initiation testing. The article provides descriptions of the various commercially available fatigue testing machines: axial fatigue testing machines and bending fatigue machines. Load cells, grips and alignment devices, extensometry and strain measuring devices, environmental chambers, graphic recorders, furnaces, and heating systems of ancillary equipment are discussed. The article presents technologies available to accomplish closed loop control of materials testing systems in performing standard materials tests and for the development of custom testing applications. It explores the advanced software tools for materials testing. The article includes a description of baseline isothermal fatigue testing, creep-fatigue interaction, and thermomechanical fatigue. The effects of various variables on fatigue resistance and guidelines for fatigue testing are also presented.

Affordability is the key issue facing design engineers and manufacturers of composite components for current and next-generation aircraft, spacecraft, propulsion systems, and other advanced applications. This article describes the software tools available for modeling and analyzing costs associated with design and manufacturing options for advanced composites programs. It presents an example of a composite exhaust nozzle shroud where the design and manufacture options were analyzed and adjusted, based on the use of cost analysis tools. The article also lists some of the attributes found in various cost modeling software and the potential cost benefits.

Abstract
Integrated computational materials engineering refers to the use of computer simulations that integrate mathematical models of complex metallurgical processes with computer models used in component and process design. This article outlines an example of a computer-aided engineering tool, such as virtual aluminum castings (VAC), developed and implemented for quickly developing durable cast aluminum power train components. It describes the procedures for the model development of the VAC system. These procedures include linking the manufacturing process to microstructure, linking microstructures to mechanical properties, linking material properties to performance prediction, and model validation and integration into the engineering process. The article discusses the benefits of the VAC system in process selection, process optimization, and improving the component design criteria.

This article describes the basic functions that should be included when considering the relationship of computer-aided design (CAD)/computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and machining. These include design, analysis, drafting, process planning, part programming, program verification, part machining, and inspection. The article provides information on hardware, data base, interfaces, and benefits of integrating machining with the CAD/CAM system of a manufacturing plant. Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) creates parts layer by layer directly from three-dimensional computer-aided design data. This article discusses systematic ways to address the challenges in AM data integration by exploring various AM-specific data-integration scenarios that can improve the current AM ecosystem. Representative AM data sources are also described. A reference framework that captures the heterogenous AM data sources and existing data-integration mechanisms are used. General data-integration practices—based on existing manufacturing data and lab information system integration experiences—are recommended to automate AM data flow, operations, and development. Lastly, the article discusses the seven steps in the big-data-integration workflow.

This article discusses continuum modeling, which is the most relevant approach in modeling grain growth, densification, and deformation during sintering. Continuum plasticity models are frequently used to describe the mechanical response of metal powders during compaction. The article illustrates the typical procedure for computer simulation for press and sinter process. It describes the procedure to obtain the material properties based on the generalized Shima-Oyane model. The article presents a wide variety of tests, accounting for data on the grain growth, densification, and distortion where these data help in the development of a constitutive model for sintering simulation. Finally, the article provides information on the simulation approaches used to optimize die compaction and sintering.

Abstract
The qualification of additive manufacturing (AM) processes and the certification of AM parts is recognized as a significant impediment to the rapid, low-cost deployment of AM manufacturing. The challenges are multifaceted; however, it is an attempt to apply conventional qualification approaches to an inherently different process that has caused the most difficulty. This article examines the conventional qualification methodology and explores how the unique characteristics of AM pose a set of qualification challenges. The extant approach to the qualification of AM processes is described, followed by a discussion on a possible future state.

This article presents an overview of the use of mechanism analysis (kinematics and dynamics) and simulation. It provides indications of the directions in which mechanism simulation is growing and how it is integrated in the evolving computer aided design and computer aided engineering (CAD/CAE) fields. Mechanism simulation is best used as part of a concurrent CAD/CAE approach to design. The article discusses the state, evolution, and direction of application for these techniques in a variety of fields.
