Abstract
Induction heat treatment is a common method for hardening and tempering of crankshafts, which are necessary components in almost every internal combustion engine for cars, trucks, and machinery, as well as pumps, compressors, and other devices. Similar to crankshafts, camshafts also belong to the same group of the critical engine/powertrain components. This article focuses on induction technologies used for surface hardening and tempering of automotive crankshafts, and provides general information on U-shaped inductors with crankshaft rotation and clamshell or split inductors without crankshaft rotation and their pros and cons. It also describes the effect of post-heat-treatment processes in crankshafts. The article concludes with a discussion on induction hardening of camshafts that focuses on those used in automobiles and truck engines.

Abstract
This article focuses on the use of electron beam (EB) for near-net shape processing based on the wire feed material-delivery method. EB deposition processes start with a 3-D model designed in a computer-aided design (CAD) environment, where the deposition path and process parameters are generated. The article provides a description of the electron beam direct manufacturing (EBDM) system used for manufacturing of target parts with the aid of a case study. The control of the essential variables of dynamic beam deflection is also reviewed. The article also includes information on the applications of high-frequency multibeam processes, namely, selective surface treatment, multiple-pool welding, and pre- and post-heat treating.

An understanding of the influence of microstructure on machinability can provide an insight into more efficient machining and the correct solution to problems. Providing numerous microstructures to depict examples, this article describes the relationship between the microstructure and machinability of cast irons, steels, and aluminum alloys. It presents data on hardness values and the effect of the matrix microstructure of cast iron on tool life. It also explains how a higher inclusion count improves the machinability of steels and why aluminum alloys can be machined at very high speeds.

Thermal spray coatings are often modified or treated by a variety of post-coating operations to transform the as-coated material into a final product based on coating composition and application. This article provides a detailed description of the post-coating operations that fall under two basic categories: surface treatments, such as dimensional, non-dimensional, and geometric finishing; and internal treatments, such as sealing, heat treating, and peening. It also describes various inspection and testing methods, including destructive and non-destructive inspections, often employed after post-coating operations.

Abstract
Brazing technology is continually advancing for a variety of metals including aluminum and its alloys and nonmetals. This article discusses the key physical phenomena in aluminum brazing and the materials for aluminum brazing, including base metals, filler metals, brazing sheet, and brazing flux. It describes various aluminum brazing methods, such as furnace, vacuum, dip, and torch brazing. Friction, flow, induction, resistance, and diffusion brazing are some alternate brazing methods discussed. The article reviews the brazing of aluminum to ferrous alloys, aluminum to copper, and aluminum to other nonferrous metals. It also discusses post-braze processes in terms of post-braze heat treatment and finishing. The article concludes with information on the safety precautions considered in brazing aluminum alloys.

This article describes post-processing techniques for machining, finishing, heat treating, and deburring used to remove additive manufacturing (AM) metallic workpieces from a base plate and subsequent techniques to enhance printed workpieces. The AM processes include powder bed fusion, binder jetting, and direct energy deposition. The discussion provides information on powder removal, powder recycling and conditioning, part removal, and part enhancement. The mechanism, applications, advantages, and limitations of mechanical, radiation, and chemical-finishing processes as well as the properties of the resulting material are also covered.

Press quenching is a specialized quenching technique that can be utilized during heat treatment to minimize distortion of complex geometrical components by using specialized tooling for generating concentrated forces that constrain the movement of the component in a carefully controlled manner. This article provides a detailed account of the fundamental components of quenching machines, including the upright machine section, control panel, lower die table, tooling, and the base. In addition, it summarizes the critical factors affecting component distortion during press-quenching.
