Abstract
Strategies for the lubrication of mechanical systems operating in extreme environments must exclude the liquid lubricants and greases and rely on alternative methods of lubrication, such as gases and solids. This article provides a survey of some of the more effective alternative methods of lubrication. It provides a discussion on the solid materials that have been most commonly used as lubricants: carbon-base materials, transition metal dichalcogenides, polymers, and soft metals.

Abstract
The surface of irons and steels can be hardened by introducing nitrogen (nitriding), nitrogen and carbon (nitrocarburizing), or nitrogen and sulfur (sulfonitriding) into the surface. This article lists the principal reasons for nitriding and nitrocarburizing, and summarizes the typical characteristics of nitriding processes along with a general comparison of carburizing processes in a table. It describes the two most common nitriding methods: gas nitriding and ion (plasma) nitriding. The article discusses the wear behavior of nitrided layers and the wear resistance of selected steels. Rolling-contact fatigue (RCF) occurs in rolling contacts such as bearings, rolls, and gears. The article provides a discussion on rolling-contact fatigue of nitrided steels for aerospace bearing components.

Abstract
This article describes different methods by which the composition of cast iron can be analyzed. It provides particular emphasis on the methods for evaluating the graphitization potential of a melt with prescribed limits on carbon, silicon, and alloying elements. The article discusses the effect of cooling rate on the graphitization of a given composition by chill and wedge tests. Thermal analysis of cooling curves gives excellent information about the solidification and subsequent cooling of cast iron alloys. The article presents some applications of the cooling curve analysis and explains the evaluation of carbon-silicon contents, graphite shape, graphite nucleation, and contraction-expansion balance. It illustrates the use of an immersion steel sampling device for compacted graphite iron production and provides information on the ferrite-pearlite ratio in ductile iron.

Abstract
The control of the solidification process of cast iron requires understanding and control of the thermodynamics of the liquid and solid phases and of the kinetics of their solidification, including nucleation and growth. This article addresses issues that allow for the determination of probability of formation and relative stability of various phases. These include the influence of temperature and composition on solubility of various elements in iron-base alloys; calculation of solubility lines, relevant to the construction of phase diagrams; and calculation of activity of various components. It discusses the role of alloying elements in terms of their influence on the activity of carbon, which provides information on the stability of the main carbon-rich phases of iron-carbon alloys, that is, graphite and cementite. The article reviews the carbon solubility in multicomponent systems, along with saturation degree and carbon equivalent.

Abstract
Cast irons, like steels, are iron-carbon alloys but with higher carbon levels than steels to take advantage of eutectic solidification in the binary iron-carbon system. This article introduces the solid-state heat treatment of iron castings and describes the various processes of heat treatment of cast iron. It provides information on stress relieving, annealing, normalizing, through hardening, and surface hardening of these castings. The article discusses general considerations for the heat treatment of cast iron. Cast irons are occasionally nitrided for various applications with the aim of enhancing surface hardness and corrosion resistance of the products. The article describes molten salt bath cyaniding and ion nitriding of cast iron.

Abstract
Gray irons are commonly classified by their minimum tensile strength. This article describes properties used in the selection of gray irons and the factors that affect properties, particularly the effect of solidification. It discusses the three steps that its processing undergoes in the foundry: liquid metal preparation, solidification, and solid-state transformation. The article discusses the tensile properties of gray cast iron: tensile strength, yield strength, ductility, and modulus of elasticity. It describes hardness tests that are performed for determining the approximate strength characteristics and machinability of a gray iron casting. The article also presents typical mechanical properties of heat-resistant gray irons in a table. It concludes with information on the automotive application of alloy cast irons.

Abstract
This article presents ternary alloy phase diagrams to be used primarily by engineers to solve industrial problems. The diagrams presented are for stable equilibrium conditions, with the exception of metastable conditions for some diagrams involving carbon and iron. In some ternary diagrams involving carbon and iron, the symbol M is used to represent both iron and the other metallic element when the two metals substitute for each other in a carbide phase.

Abstract
This article focuses on induction hardening process for heat treating operations specifically designed to result in proper microstructure/property combinations in either localized or in the final parts. It briefly reviews the heat treating basics for conventional heat treating operations of steels with iron-carbon phase and transformation diagrams. The article provides a summary of the important temperatures, definitions, and microstructural constituents associated with heat-treated steels. Basic transformation characteristics of heat-treated steels are reviewed. The article also discusses the various aspects of steel heat treatment by induction processing, and concludes with a description of steel alloys for induction processing.

Abstract
True alkaline chemicals include caustic soda or sodium hydroxide (NaOH), caustic potash or potassium hydroxide (KOH), and soda ash or sodium carbonate (Na2CO3). This article reviews alkaline chemicals and provides a basis for a general discussion on various alkaline exposures. It describes the corrosion effects of caustic soda on aluminum and aluminum alloys, iron and steel, carbon and low-alloy steels, stainless steels, high-performance austenitic alloys, nickel and nickel alloys, copper and copper alloys, titanium and titanium alloys, and zirconium and zirconium alloys. The article discusses the corrosion effects of caustic soda on nonmetallic materials: plastics, thermoplastics, thermosetting resin materials, carbon and graphite, and ceramics. It concludes with information on the effects of contamination of and by caustic and of admixtures of caustic with other chemicals, including chlorates, chlorides, chlorine/hypochlorite, mercury, sulfur, and iron.

Abstract
Phosphoric acid is less corrosive than sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. This article discusses the corrosion rates of metal alloys in phosphoric acid, including aluminum, carbon steel and cast irons, stainless steels, nickel-rich G-type alloys, copper and copper alloys, nickel alloys, lead, titanium alloys, and zirconium alloys. Nonmetallic materials may be chemically attacked in some corrosive environments, which can result in swelling, hardening, or softening phenomena; extraction of ingredients; chemical conversion of the nonmetallic constituents; cross-linking oxidation; and/or substitution reactions. The article also describes the corrosion resistance of nonmetallic materials such as rubber and elastomeric materials, plastics, carbon and graphite, and ceramic materials.

Abstract
This article outlines the processes by which materials are selected to prevent or control localized corrosion, galvanic corrosion, and intergranular corrosion. It reviews the operating conditions and the design of candidate materials for material selection. The article discusses various corrosion-resistant materials, including ferrous and nonferrous metals and alloys, thermoplastics, reinforced thermosetting plastics, nonmetallic linings, glass, carbon and graphite, and catalyzed resin coatings. It examines an unusual form of intergranular corrosion known as exfoliation, which occurs in aluminum-copper alloys. The article also describes three types of erosion-corrosion: liquid erosion-corrosion, cavitation, and fretting. It concludes with information on the various factors to be considered for material selection, including minimum cost or economic design, minimum corrosion, minimum investment, and minimum maintenance.

Abstract
This article reviews the basic processes of fracture and fatigue and shows how these processes occur in materials. Abstract
Cast iron can be described as an alloy of predominantly iron, carbon, and silicon. This article discusses the classification of cast irons, such as gray cast iron, white cast iron, malleable cast iron, ductile cast iron, and compacted graphite iron. It reviews the various special techniques, such as groove face grooving, studding, joint design modifications, and peening, for improving the strength of a weld or its fitness for service. The article discusses the need for postweld heat treatment that depends on the condition of the casting, possible distortion during subsequent machining, the desired finish of the machined surfaces, and prior heat treatment. Carbon arc welding (CAW) utilizes a nonconsumable electrode, made of carbon or graphite, to establish an arc between itself and either a workpiece or another carbon electrode. This article describes the operation modes of the CAW process: single-electrode operation and twin-electrode operation. It presents a schematic representation of typical arrangements for single-electrode and twin-electrode carbon arc welding. Abstract
High-temperature combustion is primarily used to determine carbon and sulfur contained in a variety of materials. This article illustrates the principle of combustion and focuses on the characteristics of accelerators.
