Abstract
This article discusses the importance of friction and wear and the role of lubricants in composites. It highlights the progress and developments in using different forms of carbon allotropes in composites for improved friction and wear performance of materials. The article focuses on the widely used form known as carbon black (CB) and shows how to deal with friction and wear of polymers and composites when gamma irradiation is involved. It also discusses the role of graphite in composite materials, which is widely used as a dry lubricant. The article examines the tribology of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as components in composite materials. It also highlights some of the most pronounced examples of graphene use as a reinforcement agent for improving tribological performance in composite matrices. The article concludes with a discussion on the progress of research in diamond-containing composites.

Abstract
This article describes the results of several case history studies of the failure of polymer-matrix composite components to provide not only some representative types of failures that can encounter, but also to provide some insight into the investigative process. These case histories deal mainly with structures that exhibit an initial material and/or manufacturing defect or failures that are most prevalent and most easily solved. The components include helicopter rotor blade, composite wing spar, and aircraft rudder.

Abstract
This article addresses the issue of the implementation of composite damage tolerance requirements as it relates to military aircraft. It presents a brief introduction on the durability impact threat, damage tolerance impact threat, and other damage tolerance damage threats. The article summarizes damage tolerance criteria and durability criteria for military aircraft. It discusses the damage tolerance design philosophy for metallic structures and composite structures of the aircraft. The article describes the implementation of a damage tolerance analysis methodology in terms of the mechanics based model, the regression algorithm, and the semi-empirical analysis.

Abstract

Abstract
This article describes the fatigue properties of particle-reinforced metal-matrix composites (PR-MMCs) in terms of mechanisms of crack initiation, fatigue life, and fatigue crack growth. It reviews specimen preparation and microscopic procedures that are used in fatigue testing of MMCs. It also describes the evaluation of the long fatigue crack growth behavior of MMCs by using the test methods and specimens that are used for unreinforced metallic alloys. Fractography of MMCs under plane-strain conditions is also described with information on the observed features of MMC fatigue fracture surfaces and their observation methods.

Abstract
The properties of unidirectional composite (UDC) materials are quite different from those of conventional, metallic materials. This article provides information on the treatment of UDC stress-strain relations in the forms appropriate for analysis of thin plies of material. It explains the development of the relations between mid-surface strains and curvatures and membrane stress and moment resultants. The article discusses the properties, such as thermal expansion, moisture expansion, and conductivity, of symmetric laminates and unsymmetric laminates. It describes the distribution of temperature and moisture through the thickness of a laminate. Stresses caused due to mechanical loads, temperature, and moisture on the laminate are analyzed. The article concludes with information on interlaminar cracking, free-edge delamination, and transverse cracks of laminates.

This article provides information on corrosion control methods in aircraft structures. It discusses the design considerations for sealants in joints. The article describes the common methods to seal aircraft structures: fay surface, fillet, butt joint, channel, brush, and form-in-place seals. It discusses the surface preparation and application method of primer and topcoat systems. Primer and paint application equipment as well as sealant application equipment are reviewed.

A sandwich structure is comprised of layered composite materials formed by bonding two or more thin facings or facesheets to a relatively thick core material. Abstract
The primary motivation for the insertion of metal-matrix composites (MMCs) into aeronautical systems is the excellent balance of specific strength and stiffness offered by MMCs. This article provides information on the aerostructural, aeropropulsion, and aeronautical subsystem applications of MMCs. The applications include ventral fin, fuel access door covers, helicopter blade sleeve, fan exit guide vane, nozzle actuator piston rod, nozzle actuator links, T-1 racks, and hydraulic manifold.
