DOI: 10.31399/asm.hb.v24A.a0006993
EISBN: 978-1-62708-439-0
Abstract
This article presents the history of standardization in additive manufacturing (AM). It explains the need and structure for standardization in AM, including the application of AM standards by the industry sector. It also presents the primary purposes of these standards to create AM qualification and certification frameworks.

Abstract
This article discusses some of the additive manufacturing (AM) based fabrication of alloys and their respective mechanical, electrochemical, and in vivo performance. Firstly, it briefly discusses the three AM techniques that are most commonly used in the fabrication of metallic biomedical-based devices: binder jetting, powder-bed fusion, and directed-energy deposition. The article then characterizes the electrochemical properties of additive-manufactured/processed cobalt-chromium alloys. This is followed by sections providing an evaluation of the biological response to CoCr alloys in terms of the material and 3D printing fabrication. Discussion on the biological response as a function of direct cellular activity on the surface of CoCr alloys in static conditions (in vitro), in dynamic physiological conditions (in vivo), and in computer-simulated conditions (in silico) are further discussed in detail. Finally, the article provides information on the qualification and certification of AM-processed medical devices.

Abstract
This article discusses three typical repair types for composite structures: temporary repairs, adhesively bonded repairs, and bolted repairs. It contains a table that lists general design requirements and considerations for the repair of composite structures. The article describes ten steps for an engineering repair approach to effectively restore structural integrity to damaged composite components. Management, validation and certification of repairs are also discussed. The article presents the design guidelines for analyzing the damage and possible strategies for making a repair. It reviews three repair schemes used in repair design analysis, namely, core replacement, adhesively bonded patch, and mechanically fastened patch. The article also emphasizes the various pitfalls and problems in repair design for composite structures.

Abstract
This article provides a summary of the concepts discussed in the articles under the Section “Introduction to Testing and Certification” in ASM Handbook, Volume 21: Composites. The Section covers the basics of what to test, how to test, and how many to test to obtain specific properties of common advanced composite materials.

Abstract
Composites are complex engineered materials that often behave differently than common isotropic materials. Before testing a composite material, or before ordering or supervising such testing, the responsible party should review certain considerations. This article provides an overview of such considerations, namely, the differences between the testing of composites and testing of isotropic materials, role of certification agencies and importance of their involvement, building-block approach to composites testing, determining the purpose of testing, normalizing results, and statistical data reduction.

Abstract
The purpose of accreditation is to evaluate and assure high-quality results from suppliers of products or services without incurring the costs associated with auditing each supplier. This article describes laboratory accreditation based on the general requirements of International Organization for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC) Guide 25, "General Requirements for the Competence of Calibration and Testing Laboratories." The Guide 25 is a balanced standard that addresses quality system requirements of ISO 9000 and the technical requirements needed to perform testing or calibration. The article describes an accreditation process that would enhance the international acceptance of test data for mechanical testing laboratories.
