Abstract
Spray quenching (or jet impingement) is the most common technique employed to improve the uniformity of heat removal and break the vapor layer, allowing for a high cooling rate to be achieved. This article presents the heat transfer characteristics of quenching a hot surface, which can be expressed by the boiling and quench curve. It discusses three major spray parameters that have a substantial role in the quantification of spray cooling performance: droplet size, droplet velocity, and volumetric flux. The article also presents the available models and correlations to predict the cooling rate in spray quenching of hot surfaces during different boiling phases. It then discusses the effect of surface roughness on spray cooling performance.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) offers expansive design freedoms for realizing parts that are more complex and customized than their conventionally fabricated counterparts, but all AM technologies impose restrictions on buildable geometries and features. Design rules capture those restrictions in the form of best practices to successfully design for AM. This article discusses how design rules can potentially support and accelerate the process of developing part geometry for AM. The discussion provides examples of design rules that are independent of any specific AM process and then discusses design rules specific to particular AM processes.

Abstract
As additive manufacturing (AM) gains maturity as a manufacturing technique for production in many industrial sectors, inspection as a tool for quality control gains importance. This article is focused on the field of dimensional metrology, which is typically concerned with the verification of size, location, form, and surface topography of geometric features. The article also focuses on applicable inspection technologies, and it discusses the context within digital thread manufacturing. Abstract
Structure-property relationships for metal additive manufacturing (AM) using solidification-based AM processes (e.g., powder-bed fusion and directed-energy deposition) are the focus of this article. Static strength and ductility properties in AM materials are impacted heavily by the microstructure but are also affected by porosity and surface roughness. Fatigue failure in AM materials is also influenced by porosity, surface roughness, microstructure, and residual stress due to applied manufacturing processing parameters. Post-processing treatments can further influence fatigue failure in AM materials.

Abstract
X-ray radiography and computed tomography (CT) are nondestructive testing (NDT) tools particularly well suited to additive manufacturing (AM). A brief overview of NDT for AM is presented in this article, including other NDT methods, followed by identifying the key advantages and requirements for x-ray radiography and CT in AM. Less widely known applications of CT are also presented, including powder characterization, the evaluation of lattice structures, surface roughness measurements, and four-dimensional CT involving interrupted (before-after) CT scans of the same parts, or even in situ scans of the same part subjected to some processing or loading conditions. The article concludes with a discussion on the limits and some guidelines for the use of x-ray and CT for various AM materials.

Abstract
Erosion of a solid surface can be brought about by liquid droplet impingement (LDI), which is defined as "progressive loss of original material from a solid surface due to continued exposure to erosion by liquid droplets." In this article, the emphasis is placed on the damage mechanism of LDI erosion under the influence of a liquid film and surface roughness and on the prediction of LDI erosion. The fundamentals of LDI and processes involved in initiation of erosion are also discussed.

Abstract
Titanium alloys are known for their high-temperature strength, good fracture resistance, low specific gravity, and excellent resistance to corrosion. Ti-6Al-4V is the most commonly used titanium alloy in the aerospace, aircraft, automotive, and biomedical industries. Abstract
This article covers the current state of materials development of nickel-base superalloys for additive manufacturing (AM) processes and the associated challenges. The discussion focuses on nickel-base superalloy fusion AM processes, providing information on typically encountered cracking mechanisms in AM nickel-base superalloys, such as solid-solution-strengthened nickel-base superalloys and precipitate-strengthened nickel-base superalloys. The mechanisms include solidification cracking, strain-age cracking, liquation cracking, and ductility-dip cracking. The article also provides a short discussion on binder jet AM and powder recyclability.

Abstract
This article is concerned with gear tooth failures influenced by friction, lubrication, and wear, and especially those failure modes that occur in wind-turbine components. It provides a detailed discussion on wear (including adhesion, abrasion, polishing, fretting, and electrical discharge), scuffing, and Hertzian fatigue (including macropitting and micropitting). Details for obtaining high lubricant specific film thickness are presented. The article describes the selection criteria for lubricants, such as oil, grease, adhesive open gear lubricant, and solid lubricants. It discusses the applications of oil and gear lubricants and the types of standardized gear tests. The article presents some recommendations for selecting lubricants and lubricant viscosity for enclosed gear. It provides some examples of failure modes that commonly occur on gears and bearings in wind turbine gearboxes.

Abstract
This article first describes surface forces, and the methods of measuring them, followed by a discussion on adhesion. Abstract
This article provides an overview of cavitation erosion with a specific focus on the estimation of mass loss. It describes the mechanisms of cavitation erosion and the types of laboratory devices to evaluate the resistance to cavitation erosion of materials. The laboratory devices include rotating disks, vibratory devices, cavitating liquid jets, and high-speed cavitation tunnels. The article discusses materials selection and surface protection to prevent cavitation erosion. It reviews the fluid-structure interaction that plays a role in cavitation erosion particularly for compliant materials. Abstract
This article discusses the influence of microstructure and chemical composition on the physical properties of cast iron. The physical properties include density, thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, specific heat, electrical conductivity, magnetic properties, and acoustic properties. The article describes the properties of liquid iron in terms of surface energy, contact angles, and viscosity. The conductive properties such as thermal and electrical conductivity, of the main metallographic phases present in cast iron are presented in a table. The article discusses the magnetic properties of cast iron in terms of magnetic intensity, magnetic induction, magnetic permeability, remanent magnetism, coercive force, and hysteresis loss. It concludes with a discussion on the acoustic properties of cast iron.

Abstract
The appearance, morphology, and extent of the casting skin are the consequence of mold-metal interface interaction. This article discusses the classification of the mold-metal interaction based on severity: mild mold-metal interaction and severe mold-metal interaction. The casting surface exhibits some roughness, which depends on the molding materials used in the casting process. The article describes the effects of the casting skin in spheroidal graphite (SG) and compact graphite (CG) irons, as well as the mechanism of casting skin formation. It discusses the physics of liquid metal penetration in sand molds and concludes with information on the effect of sand additives and mold coatings.
