Abstract
Homogenization heat treatment can be useful for improving the performance and life of an alloy while in service or for improving the processability during fabrication and hot working. This article describes the identification of incipient melt point, slowest-diffusing elements, and microstructural scale for homogenization of metal alloys. It also discusses the CALPHAD software to optimize the homogenization heat treatment and the Scheil module of the commercial thermodynamic modeling software.

Abstract
This article introduces the mechanism of diffusion and the common types of heat treatments such as annealing and precipitation hardening, which are applicable to most ferrous and nonferrous systems. Three distinct processes occur during annealing: recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth. The article also describes the various types of solid-state transformations such as isothermal transformation and athermal transformation, resulting from the heat treatment of nonferrous alloys. It provides information on the homogenization of chemical composition within a cast structure.

Abstract
This article provides information on nickel alloying elements, and the heat treatment processes of various nickel alloys for applications requiring corrosion resistance and/or high-temperature strength. These processes are homogenization, annealing, solution annealing, solution treating, stabilization treatment, age hardening, stress relieving, and stress equalizing. Discussion of furnaces, fixtures, and atmospheres is included. Nickel alloys used for the heat treatment processes include corrosion-resistant nickel alloys, heat-resistant nickel alloys, nickel-beryllium alloys, special-purpose alloys such as nitinol shape memory alloys, low-expansion alloys, electrical-resistance alloys and soft magnetic alloys. Finally, the article focuses on heat treatment modeling for selecting the appropriate heat treatment process.

Abstract
This article provides information on the Unified Numbering System designations and temper designations of copper and copper alloys. It discusses the basic types of heat treating processes of copper and copper alloys, namely, homogenizing, annealing, and stress relieving, and hardening treatments such as precipitation hardening, spinodal hardening, order hardening, and quench hardening and tempering. The article presents tables that list the compositions and mechanical properties of copper alloys. It also discusses two strengthening mechanisms of copper alloys, solid-solution strengthening and work hardening. Finally, the article provides information on the equipment used for the heat treating of copper and copper alloys, including batch-type atmosphere furnaces, continuous atmosphere furnaces, and salt baths.

Abstract
Powder metallurgy (PM) processes include press and sinter hardening, metal injection molding, powder forging, hot isostatic pressing, powder rolling, and spray forming. This article provides an overview of PM processing methods and general considerations of heat treatment of PM parts that are case-hardened to obtain higher hardness, wear, fatigue, and impact properties. It describes the effects of porosity on heat treatment, alloy content on PM hardenability, and starting material on homogenization of PM steels. The article describes the properties, following heat treatment, of low-alloy steels tempered at 175 ºC for one hour, and lists recommended quench and temper parameters to achieve good wear resistance and core strength based on different ranges of porosity.

Abstract
This article presents the governing equations for moving a solidification front, based on the balance of mass, momentum, energy, and solute. It reviews how material properties and geometry can be analyzed in the context of the governing equations. The article provides several example problems that illustrate how the hierarchy of time and length scales associated with transport leads to the important features of cast microstructures. It includes equations for estimating microsegregation in cast alloys.

Abstract
Homogenization, in a broad sense, refers to the processes designed to achieve uniform distribution of solutes or phases in a given matrix. This article addresses the root cause for inhomogeneities in cast components. It is nearly a standard industrial practice to homogenize alloys before thermomechanical processing. The article lists the objectives of homogenization and benefits of homogenization treatments. The benefits include increased resistance to pitting corrosion, increased resistance to stress-corrosion cracking, improved ductility, and uniform precipitate distribution during subsequent aging. The article provides a schematic illustration of an energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscope (EDS) scattered data of solute distributions across a dendrite due to microsegregation of chromium and molybdenum. It concludes with information on the computational modeling for simulation of microsegregation of chromium and molybdenum.

Abstract
This article provides an overview of the finite-element-based analyses (FEA) of advanced composite structures and highlights key aspects such as the homogenization of materials properties and post-processing of numerical results. It discusses the analysis of composite structures based on micromechanics and macromechanics. The article describes the FEA of 3-D solid elements, 2-D cylindrical shell elements, and 1-D beam elements. It contains a table that lists the commercially available finite element codes related to the analysis of fibrous composite materials. The article presents classical examples of the mechanics of composite materials to illustrate the aspects of multilayered composite structures.
