Abstract
A mechanical part, which supports the moving part, is termed a mechanical bearing and can be classified into rolling (ball or roller) bearings and sliding bearings. This article discusses the failures of sliding bearings. It first describes the geometry of sliding bearings, next provides an overview of bearing materials, and then presents the various lubrication mechanisms: hydrostatic, hydrodynamic, boundary lubrication, elastohydrodynamic, and squeeze-film lubrication. The article describes the effect of debris and contaminant particles in bearings. The steps involved in failure analysis of sliding bearings are also covered. Finally, the article discusses wear-damage mechanisms from the standpoint of bearing design.

Abstract
This article first reviews variations within the most common types of gears, namely spur, helical, worm, and straight and spiral bevel. It then provides information on gear tooth contact and gear metallurgy. This is followed by sections describing the important points of gear lubrication, the measurement of the backlash, and the necessary factors for starting the failure analysis. Next, the article explains various gear failure causes, including wear, scuffing, Hertzian fatigue, cracking, fracture, and bending fatigue, and finally presents examples of gear and reducer failure analysis.

Abstract

Abstract
This article is concerned with gear tooth failures influenced by friction, lubrication, and wear, and especially those failure modes that occur in wind-turbine components. It provides a detailed discussion on wear (including adhesion, abrasion, polishing, fretting, and electrical discharge), scuffing, and Hertzian fatigue (including macropitting and micropitting). Details for obtaining high lubricant specific film thickness are presented. The article describes the selection criteria for lubricants, such as oil, grease, adhesive open gear lubricant, and solid lubricants. It discusses the applications of oil and gear lubricants and the types of standardized gear tests. The article presents some recommendations for selecting lubricants and lubricant viscosity for enclosed gear. It provides some examples of failure modes that commonly occur on gears and bearings in wind turbine gearboxes.

Abstract
Strategies for the lubrication of mechanical systems operating in extreme environments must exclude the liquid lubricants and greases and rely on alternative methods of lubrication, such as gases and solids. This article provides a survey of some of the more effective alternative methods of lubrication. It provides a discussion on the solid materials that have been most commonly used as lubricants: carbon-base materials, transition metal dichalcogenides, polymers, and soft metals.

Abstract
This article discusses the importance of friction and wear and the role of lubricants in composites. It highlights the progress and developments in using different forms of carbon allotropes in composites for improved friction and wear performance of materials. The article focuses on the widely used form known as carbon black (CB) and shows how to deal with friction and wear of polymers and composites when gamma irradiation is involved. It also discusses the role of graphite in composite materials, which is widely used as a dry lubricant. The article examines the tribology of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as components in composite materials. It also highlights some of the most pronounced examples of graphene use as a reinforcement agent for improving tribological performance in composite matrices. The article concludes with a discussion on the progress of research in diamond-containing composites.

Abstract
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) are solid lubricant materials, specifically, intrinsic solid lubricants, whose crystal structure facilitates interfacial sliding/shear to achieve low friction and wear in sliding contacts and low torque in rolling contacts. This article provides information on sliding friction and wear behavior of unbonded, bonded, and vapor-deposited pure and composite MoS 2 and WS 2 coatings. It discusses the rolling-torque behavior and applications of vapor-deposited pure and composite MoS 2 and WS 2 coatings. Abstract

Solid lubricants consist of materials placed at the interface between moving bodies to mitigate friction and wear. This article begins with a historical overview of solid lubricants and discuses the characteristics and fundamental aspects of solid lubricants. Abstract
Drawing is a process by which a workpiece is pulled against a die to produce a wire, bar, or tube with smaller cross sectional area compared with the initial stock. This article discusses the variables that affect the drawing process and the parameters that influence friction, lubrication, and wear. These parameters include process, lubricant, workpiece, and tooling. The article provides information on dry and wet lubrication in wire drawing. The dry lubrication refers to use of solid lubricants while wet lubrication refers to the practice of providing a liquid lubricant to the workpiece-die interface. The article describes the most common types and causes of die wear: abrasive wear, adhesive wear, surface fatigue wear, thermal fatigue wear, and catastrophic failure. It concludes with a discussion on the surface treatment and texturing that are used to reduce die wear in drawing operations.
