Abstract
High-volume additive manufacturing (AM) for structural automotive applications, along the lines of economically viable technologies such as powder metallurgy, castings, and stampings, remains a lofty goal that must be realized to obtain the well-known advantages of AM. This article presents two key opportunities for AM related to automotive applications, specifically within the realm of metal laser powder-bed fusion: alloys and product designs capable of high throughput. The article also presents the general methodology of alloy development for automotive AM. It provides examples of unique designs for reciprocating components in elevated-temperature applications that are also exposed to demanding tribological conditions. The article also discusses the future of AM for automotive applications.

Abstract
In addition to failures in shafts, this article discusses failures in connecting rods, which translate rotary motion to linear motion (and conversely), and in piston rods, which translate the action of fluid power to linear motion. It begins by discussing the origins of fracture. Next, the article describes the background information about the shaft used for examination. Then, it focuses on various failures in shafts, namely bending fatigue, torsional fatigue, axial fatigue, contact fatigue, wear, brittle fracture, and ductile fracture. Further, the article discusses the effects of distortion and corrosion on shafts. Finally, it discusses the types of stress raisers and the influence of changes in shaft diameter.

Abstract
Aluminum alloys are widely used in engineered components because of their excellent strength-to-weight ratio. Their use in applications requiring wear resistance is more limited. One of the main limitations of aluminum alloys is the poor tribological behavior mainly due to their relatively low hardness, which favors large plastic deformation under sliding conditions. This article discusses the classes and mechanisms of wear in aluminum-silicon alloys, aluminum-tin bearing alloys, and aluminum-matrix composites; describes the effect of material-related parameters on wear behavior of these alloys; and reviews their applications in a variety of tribological applications in the automotive industry ranging from aluminum-tin alloys for plain bearings to alloys with hard anodizing for machine elements. Methods to improve wear resistance and alloy hardness are also discussed.

Abstract
Aluminum products such as fasteners and automotive components are often produced by cold extrusion because it facilitates high volume production of near-net-shape parts. This article describes the cold extrusion process for aluminum alloys and the associated requirements for tooling, dies, punches, and other equipment. It covers typical tool materials and their working properties, and provides best practices for sizing aluminum slugs and preparing them for use. The article also discusses the wide range of achievable shapes from shallow cup-like extrusions to deep cups and complex parts with longitudinal flutes, stems, and grooves.

Abstract

Abstract
Cast irons have been widely used by engineers in applications that require low cost, excellent castability, good damping capacity, ease of machining, and wear resistance. This article discusses the classification of wear for cast irons: adhesive wear, abrasive wear, and erosive wear. Typical wear applications for a variety of cast iron grades are listed in a table. The article reviews the general wear characteristics of gray irons, compacted graphite (CG) irons, and ductile irons. It discusses the typical compositions and properties of white and chilled iron castings. Gray cast iron is the dominant material for both brake drums and disk brake rotors. Abstract

Abstract

Abstract
Induction heat treatment is a common method for hardening and tempering of crankshafts, which are necessary components in almost every internal combustion engine for cars, trucks, and machinery, as well as pumps, compressors, and other devices. Similar to crankshafts, camshafts also belong to the same group of the critical engine/powertrain components. This article focuses on induction technologies used for surface hardening and tempering of automotive crankshafts, and provides general information on U-shaped inductors with crankshaft rotation and clamshell or split inductors without crankshaft rotation and their pros and cons. It also describes the effect of post-heat-treatment processes in crankshafts. The article concludes with a discussion on induction hardening of camshafts that focuses on those used in automobiles and truck engines.

Abstract
Induction heat treating is used in the off-road machinery industry for hardening steel and cast iron components used in a wide range of applications. This article focuses on the usage of induction hardening components in the industry, and discusses the basic requirements of steel and cast iron to undergo induction hardening. It provides a comparison on single-shot and scan hardening methods to select the suitable one for induction heat treating of gears and sprockets.
