The impact of additive manufacturing (AM) on a range of industrial applications, from aerospace and healthcare to automotive and construction, is poised to be profound. To disseminate the underlying knowledge of this rapidly evolving technology, ASM International published ASM Handbook, Volume 24, Additive Manufacturing Processes, in 2020, providing comprehensive information on the development of AM; descriptions of materials and processes for polymers, ceramics, and metals; and illustrating the differences in the characteristics of metal alloys produced by AM processes compared to conventional processes.

As the knowledge in the field of AM continues to expand, ASM Handbook, Volume 24A, Additive Manufacturing Design and Applications, provides a deeper understanding of recent developments in the field and extends the knowledge base from the previous Volume. This Volume consists of nine sections, organized to provide extensive knowledge in a simplified manner:

  • Materials/Process Development focuses on alloy design, process optimization, structure-property relationships, and material and process modeling.

  • Design Principles describes the design principles necessary to achieve the unique characteristic of AM: design freedom.

  • Data Management and Digital Thread provides detailed descriptions of data management principles, data analytics, machine learning, data acquisition, data formats, data models, data integration, and data security.

  • Mechanical Property Characterization and Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation elaborate on the characteristics to be measured and the different test methods that can be used in AM.

  • In Situ Process Control and Monitoring in Additive Manufacturing includes coverage of machine learning, thermography, and x-ray imaging.

  • Applications of Additive Manufacturing discusses applications in the aviation, space, medical, automotive, electronics, oil and gas, nuclear and wind energy, and construction industry sectors.

  • Standards, Qualification, and Certification in Additive Manufacturing illustrates the use of standards to create a quality framework and the considerations for qualification and certification.

  • Environmental, Economic, and Business Considerations in Additive Manufacturing explains environmental impact, health and safety, supply chain management, blockchain, and AM business adoption.

Leading experts in academia, research and development, government organizations, consulting firms, and industry collaborated to create the content of this Volume, providing up-to-date knowledge on all aspects of the AM value chain with the required specificity. Researchers, professional engineers, designers, engineering managers, and students who wish to learn more about the most recent developments in AM should use this Volume as a reference. We hope this Volume will support commercial and academic work and stimulate new thoughts and innovative ideas to take this exciting and rapidly evolving technology to the next level.

This Volume is the product of the high level of dedication and commitment from all its contributors. We express our sincere appreciation for their time and effort and their willingness to share their subject matter expertise for the benefit of the AM community.
