Foreword

In response to the rapidly growing field of additive manufacturing (AM), ASM International is proud to present this latest entry in the ASM Handbook series, Volume 24A: Additive Manufacturing Design and Applications. What began as a technology to create 3D models and objects has evolved into a major revolution—AM is now at the absolute forefront of modern manufacturing. This compendium of reference information was developed to reflect this evolution by providing AM engineers and technical personnel with the up-to-date information they need.

Volume 24A follows the publication of ASM Handbook, Volume 24, Additive Manufacturing Processes, published in 2020. Volume 24A provides a comprehensive review of AM design fundamentals and applications. The primary focus is on metallic systems, with limited emphasis on polymers and ceramics, where applicable. The articles herein cover a variety of relevant, critical AM topics in considerable depth and breadth. There are articles on materials/process development; design principles; digital data management (the first time this has been addressed in the ASM Handbook series); mechanical property characterization; nondestructive evaluation; in situ process control and monitoring; various key sectors that are embracing and adopting AM technologies; AM standards, qualification, and certification; and finally, environmental, economic, and business concerns.

ASM International is both grateful for and appreciative of the tireless work and dedication of volunteer editors, authors, and reviewers who devoted their time and expertise to develop a reference publication of the highest technical and editorial caliber. Volume Editors Mohsen Seifi, David L. Bourell, William Frazier, and Howard Kuhn put forth extraordinary efforts to craft this comprehensive body of knowledge, written by the world’s leading innovators, researchers, and practitioners in the burgeoning AM field.
